SECTION 2 - PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALEK-HERALD, WEDNESDAY . MA\ 22.1963 Harvard Milk Days salute dairy farmer It's a slice of Americana. It's Milk Days: Harvard's 44th annual salute to the dairy far mer. It's a family-style celebration, the kind the American Dairy Association would put its Heal Seal of approval on. There are parades, crepe- paper clad princes and prin cesses, a queen contest, bed races, a drum and bugle corps competition, carnival rides, a talent show, a tractor pull, farm tours, goat and horse shows. Of course, there's a cattle show, too. The festival will begin this year on Thursday, May 30 with the crowning of the Milk Days Queen. The final event will be a fireworks display Sunday, June 2. The highlight of the celebration is traditionally the Milk Days parade. Last year, the unusual crowd of 55,000 viewed the parade, which featured more than 100 units including 25 bands. The main street through downtown Harvard is renamed for the weekend, becoming the Milky Way. That image is taken so far as to whitewashing Ayer Street in the early morning hours of the Milk Days Satur day. This year's parade will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, with a milk drinking contest in front of the reviewing stand. About a half hour later, more than 100 units will begin a two-hour tour of the Milky Way. At noon that day, the WGN radio Noon Show will be broadcast live from Harvard. Milk Days Saturday will begin at 8 a.m. with a goat show. Farm tours being at 8:30 a.m., and a half hour later, the cattle show will get underway. The goat and cattle shows will be held under tents at the Milk Day grounds on the north edge of Harvard. Immediately after the parade, at about 3 p.m., the goat show will resume. At 6 p.m., a teany of Army personnel will hold a repeling demonstration at the high school football field. The field will also be the site of; the Creme de Corps n drum and bugle competition. The contest, which features some of the top drum and bugle units in the nation, opens the 1985 season for the young musicians. Last year, more than 1,500 people watched the contest, which was won by the Rockford Phantom Regiment. At 8 p.m. Thuraday, May 30, The Milk Days Queen will be selected and the coronation ball will be held at the Harvard Moose Lodge. Seven area high schools are represented in the contest, and one will succeed Kim Kvistad as Milk Days Queen. A live band will be featured at the ball. v Milk Days Friday, May 31, is set aside for the kids. A youth parade will be held through downtown Harvard at 6:30 p.m.; followed by the crowning of the Milk Days Prince and Princess at 7:30 p.m. at the high school football field. A clown show for the kids will follow at 8 p.m. Days Friday and Milk Days Sunday, June 2, will begin with a horse show in rural Harvard at 8 a.m. The goat show will continue at 9 a.m.-, and at noon fit tractor pull will be held across from the Milk Days grounds. The weekend will begin to wind down at 5 p.m. with the 10th annual Milk Days talent contest, which has three age divisions and cash prizes. The fireworks display will close the celebration at 9:30 p.m. . Throughout the weekend, carnival rides, concessions and a flea market will be held at the Milk Days grounds. On Milk Saturday, children will be able to visit the Wcfe Farm, also on the Milk Days grounds. T9>e bed race will be on the Blilk^ Way at 7 p.m. Milk Days Wednesday, May 29. Teams will compete in men's, women's and coed divisions. A sneak preview to the Milk Days festivities will be offered Sunday, May 28, with a sock hop in the enclosed downtown parking facilities of the Harvard State Bank. Food, beverages and plenty of music will be available from 8 p.m. to mid night.
