Boland and Fritz both com peted in the 1,600 meter run, roughly equivalent to a mile. Fritz took a first place in the event, and Boland a second in their respective 1,600 meter races at the regional meet May 11, qualifying them for the state meet. At the state meet, Boland was third out of 25 girls, with an outstanding time of 5:46.92. Fritz, meanwhile, placed ninth out of 24 boys, with an exceptional time of his own, 5:13.35. "Both of them proved they have what it takes and should be around for a long time to come," Trojan head coach Carrie Mortell said. The Trojans are coached by Mortell and Mark Jadzak. Both Boland and Fritz are seventh- graders. COVERT fast approaching for Covert and his teammates. On Julv 20, the Bears' roster will again assemble at Che University of Wisconsin- Platteville for training camp. "Platteville was a positive influence for us last year, and so Coach (Mike) Ditka is holding camp there again this year," Covert commented. "At Lake Forest (the Bears' headquarters and former camp), it's like being at home. The team gathers for practice, and they they drive home afterwards. "At Platteville there was more positive interaction between the players. We got MCHS tails twice, ends regular season The McHenry High girls' softball team ended its regular season - perhaps mercifully - Monday with a 14-8 loss to Dundee-Crown. It was the sixth straight loss for the* Warriors, who are scheduled to face Jacobs in Algonquin in the first round of regional play Thursday at 4 pom. McHenry finished at 6-12 in the Fox Valley Conference, and are 8-14 overall. 7 The Warriors were victimized by nine first inning runs by the Chargers, who nicked losing pitcher Kris Carlson for 13 hits. Brenda Bell was the winning hurler, stifling McHenry on nine hits, while walking just four. D-C got five RBI singles in the first, coupled with two walks and four errors, to take a commanding early lead, and the Warriors couldn't catch up. Monique Betancourt and Rachel Prushinski each went 2- for-4 for McHenry. Prushinski against Jacobs," said Wirtz. "Michelle two-hit them last time out, and Kris five-hit them earlier. They're not a great hitting team. If we don't walk too many, it should be a game." The winner will face the Woodstock-D-C survivor Saturday morning. CL. Central 15, McHenry 9 The Warriors struggled against the last-place Tigers Friday at West Campus, as the visitors rallied for nine runs in the last three innings to win, 15- 9. Central pounded out 16 hits to McHenry's 10. Sophomore Stropoli suffered the defeat, while fellow classmate Prushinski came on in relief and allowed the final nine runs. Tania B rammer had three hits for Central, while Cindy Gaines and Betancourt had two each for McHenry. Gaines had a homer and two RBI, while Betancourt Brian Fritz and Erin Boland of McHenry Jr. High traveled to the junior high state track meet recently. Boland finished third in her event, while Fritz grabbed a ninth place in his. •(Continued from page 16) to know each other better. I really liked it," he added. Covert told the students gathered for his presentation that commitment was a necessary ingredient for success. Yet for Covert, his commitment to be the best possible athlete he can be does not overshadow his allegiance to the Chicago Bears. "I really don't go out and set up personal goals every season. Everything is a team goal. To help Walter Payton rush f for 1,000 yards and to win 12 out of 16 games, make it to the playoffs and win the Central Division title. McHenry Men's 16-inch Softball The McHenry Men's 16-inch Softball League began play last week, with the Knights of Colum bus and Raymond's Bowl claim ing opening night victories Tues day. Thursday's games were washed out at McHenry's VFW Field. Raymond's Bowl 24, HfcM Machine Movers 0 H&M Machine Movers received a rude welcome to the league in their first game, as Raymond's Bowl scored 12 runs in the second in ning to claim the five-inning romp. Jeff Cychner had H&M's first-ever hit, as the losers could claim Just two singles off winning pitcher Bernie Klapperich. Three double plays also dimmed H&M's chances. Raymond's got four hits, including two doubles and a triple, from Vern Peterson, while Tim Farr and Jim Knox each dollected three hits and scored three runs Knox had two homers, a triple and six RBI. Mark Mayer scored three times and knocked in three, as Raymond's pounded H&M pitching for 23 hits. Knights of Columbus 8. Novotny Sales 7 "When those things hap pen, the individual ac complishments fall into place," Covert emphasized. "The team goals must come first and the individual goals second." The Bears should find themselves in the heat of the Central Division battle once again, but a tougher schedule could hamper their chances. "When you have a strong season record, the team steps up in class. We're excited about playing the tougher schedule of teams." Covert said the team wouldn't be preparing any differently for the 1985 slate, Novotny Sales scored five runs in the top of the first to take a commanding lead, but a two-out, grand slam homer by Dan Peschke in the Knights' first cut the gap to 5-4. With two runs already across in the third and one out, Novotny's Leon Palatas tripled. Chris Felde hit a hard shot back to pitcher Chris Juz- wik who got Palatas in a rundown, third baseman Mike Miller finally making the putout. The Knights then scored one in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth, and held Novotny's scoreless the final four frames. Dave Miller, Palatas and Randy Vauk each had two hits for Novotny Sales. Bob Moehling and Juzwik had two hits apiece for the winners, while Dan Coughlin homered and scored two runs. which includes battles with San Francisco and Miami. "We have to control our own destiny. You can't expect to go to the playoffs with a 4-4 divisional record. The team needs to be more fired up against their division challengers if they expect to win the games necessary to take our own division." The Bears will spend their pre-season exhibition schedule putting the fun damentals into place, said Covert. "We don't concentrate so much on our win-loss record during the pre-season," pointed out Covert. "What matters is that we get a maximum workout while we check out the other team." Covert's bottom line on the Bears in 1985: "The Bears are wiimers. We're not classified as losers anymore. We're not the patsies of the Central Division. We're a team to contend with." Jim Covert and his teammates will be trying to prove that again very soon. wmmmm h School [»f state to at 4 p.m In mubost r, and both McHenry area teams will be in action at thi Crystal Central First-round jgMBdftt will be mm *§ •"& • --it-- ww at to|MMeaea schools.
