SECTION 2 - PAGE 19 - PLAINOEALER-HERALD. FRIDAY , M\\ 31.1985 Sports Ladies' Golf CHAP^HILL The Tuesday Ladies League ( team standings, after the match play of May 21rst, found little Chef still leading wjth 34 points. FQX Hole Tap has passed ' Steffans Jewelers for second place with ̂ 30 points. Steffans * Jewelers has 28, Classic Trophy 26%, McHenry Favorite Sports 24%, Acu Pac 24, McHenry Floral 17*4 and Mar Ray Costumes 15%. The contest of the day was for individual low putts. Diane Derby won in class A with 14. Pat Musielac was sinner in class B with 15 and in class C it was Kathy Schaefer who had 16. May 28th was sunny but oh so cold! It was only 59 degrees when the match started. There didn't seem to be many good shots. Perhaps, besides the cold weather, evetyone had too much holiday over Memorial Day. Lorraine Freund birdied number 10 and Mary Jane Nowak got her bird on 18. Laura Schmitt had a nice chip in on 17 „ and bemoaned the fact that the * contest of the day was not for . individual low putts as she only * had 12. However, since the days * contest was for team low putts I her low score must have helped * her team. The winners will be <reported next week. :: Esta ; MCHENRY COUNTRY CLUB % « Another one Of those glorious, /.cloudless days made for per fection as the Divot Dolls of < McHenry Country Club played a : Tennessee Dog Fight in their « . « :No luck I iat Wilmot ; WILMOT, Wis. - McHenry's Dennis Carlton couldn't provide a repeat performance of his feature r race win in the late model sportsman category from a week ago, and his McHenry area counterparts didn't do too well, either. v Carlton did manage to have the best qualifying time, but he couldn't break into the top five in the 20-lap feature. Duke Norton of Wonder Lake could, however, and did, finishing second to2ionVs Wayne Dukas - v Tuesday event. Teams com prised of one each in Class A, B, C and D got off promptly with a shotgun start. With howls Of delight from some and groans of dismay from others, the play of the day produced winners and losers. In the winners group the team of Mabel Smith, Esther Jemiola, Mickie Farmer and Bonnie Johnson walked away with low net of 49 (due in part to a magnificent chip-in executed by Mabel on 15). At two strokes higher, the team of Laverne Harpling, Toots Gerstad," Mary Mullen and Sully Consago turned in a 51 for second place. I n c i d e n t l y , s o m e t h i n g overlooked in last week's reporting was the approach shot on 16 by Sully - she sank the •shot -- apparently practicing for this week's event. A 52 was Carded by the team of Gloria Spiess, Katherine Bolger, Magda Henhapl and Loretta Coatar to put them in third place. Following for a tie for fourth place were two teams each carding 55 net. They were .the team of Man; Mutchinsky, Bernice Dolce, Emily Rhoner golf when they begin a two-week month of May. In the meantime, they have best wishes for a win Partners Match Tournament Friday will find the traveling and fly and Peg Anderson and the team of Bet Betty and tee-off time will be an hour team hosting the ladies from earlier than it's been in the Chapel Hill. Needless to say, Happy Golfing! Liz of Betty Mohan, Myrt Johnson, waym Young. The big hero of that dayman and Lorraine team apparently was Lorraine who was dropping 35 foot putts as though they were nothing. A mighty fine eye and hand, Lorraine. Frankly, with a Tennessee Dog Fight precluding any in dividual scoring no low putting or other such statistics were recorded - that is, with the exeception of the action by Joanie Buss on 15. It seems each shot used was Joanie's, in cluding the chip-in to post a birdie on that hole. Well, there has to be an exception to everything. Next week the gals will get down to playing more serious Auto Racing Skip Marint of McHenry captured first place in Heat No. 3, while Woodstock's Kevin Rein finished second in the first heat. Racing will continue this Saturday night at the Wisconsin track.-';: SPORTS FANS... I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought to you by Phil Ooftllng Amazingly, a baseball player once made a hit for 2 different big league teams on the same day!.. One of the tour boys is out in the fairway and the announcer says something about bringing a 4-iron in from right to left over a greenside bunker. "Oh, he's left it out to the right. He won't be pleased with that effort." As the ball comes to rest 30 feet from the pin. From my standpoint, if I can hit a 200-yard shot to within 30 feet, I've hit an outstanding shot. (After all, 30-footers are makeable.) And the same ratio of distance to miss should apply to your thinking also. Five percent is the magic number. If you miss your target by only five percent of the distance the ball has to travel to get the target, you've hit a good shot. Pat yourself on the back. Think about it. How many times have you looked at a 40-footer and hoped (even prayed) for a second putt of two feet? Or, most fairways are 30 yards wide. Aim at the middle and hit your drive 200 yards. Five percent of 200 is 10 yards. Miss the middle of the fairway by 10 yards on either side and you're still in the short grass. Pat yourself on the back again. Golf is a game of misses. More so than hitting the truly great shot, good scores come from minimizing the disasters and maximizing the five percent error. Next week: Zen and. the Art of Golf. r : .
