Carroll O'Connor, Michael Shea, Ben Johnson. 1969. TdeWaves Caryn Richman knew she was the 'Gidget' type By Marc Mlnnelll Think. Think hard. Think of beach blanket bacchanals. Think of giggling gossips. Think of silly shenanigans and teenage traumas. Think of Gidget. That's right. Just when you thought it was safe to put on a bikini, that pint-size, precious pixie makes a comeback in "Gidget's Summer Vacation." (The syndicated TV movie airs this week.) Francine ("Gidget") Lawrence is based on a real-life Californian named Kathy Zuckerman and has been por trayed by many actresses. First there was Sandra Dee. Then Deborah Walley. Then Cindy Carol. Then Sally Field. Then Karen Valentine. Then Monie Ellis. And now there's Caryn Richman. a pint-size actress who smiles like Sandra Dee, laughs like Deborah Walley. looks like Sally Field and sounds like. well, you get the idea. "I'm not confused about identify." says Miss Richman. 28. "but I've never tried to be a tall 'Charlie's Angels' type. I'm wholesome, bubbly, energetic and petite." Miss Richman pauses, sipping a diet beverage. "That's why, when I heard about this new Gidget role, I knew I'd be perfect." But viewers of "Gidget's Summer Vacation" may be shocked to learn that Gidget is less than perfect. "She's not a ditzy 16-year-old who loves America and apple pie," explains Miss Richman, who may be remembered by day time fans for her two-and-acjpalf-year stint as Elena Dekker on the now-defunct NBC 3bap "Texas." "She's an older Gidget -- she's 27 -- she's married to Moondoggie (played by Dean Butler) and learning to deal with the problems that face the women of today. Should Gidget give up her job? Should she have children? Will she and Moondoogie make the payments on their house? Moondoggie even has something going with his boss ... who's a beautiful young woman." Does Miss Richman thinks there's a need for "Gidget's Summer Vacation"? She ponders the question. "Need is a big word," she says, savoring theJast drop of her beverage. "This isn't a show about teen suicide, but. yes, there's a need for 'Gidget.' This film is family entertainment. It will make peo ple laugh and cry. Isn't that what life's all about?" „ ©t**S Computes © MOVIE: 'Mr. Mom' © folondnr 60 BiMy Graham ©PMMagazino © S3) Windy City AHve 60 One by One © 3D It's A living © MOVIE: In tide Daisy Clover' A young girl's rise to stardom in the thirties is traced through the complications arising from her failure to adjust.
