For the first three sea­ sons of the NBC series, the dashing detective, played by suave Pierce Brosnan, has gone by that mysteri­ ous made-up name. "But now my character will be the one to discover Remington's past." said actress Doris Roberts excit­ edly. Miss Roberts, who plays Steele's and Laura Holt's (Stephanie Zimbal- ist) assistant. Mildred Krebs, was just about ?o depart for a month in England, where four epi­ sodes are to be taped as next season's openers. Can sh '̂at least give us a hint? ' "I honestly don't know. The excitement for me is just, as great as the audience's." Miss Roberts does know, however, that this season her character will be in the thick of the action. "They're unchain­ ing me from the desk. I'm going to be a real gumshoe." An active character is quite a change from Miss Roberts' former nighttime roles. "On 'Angie' (in which she played heroine Donna Pescow's mother). I sat in the kitchen for two years. On 'Barney Miller,' I was a put-upon wife who showed up in jail once in a while. On 'Alice.' I played her mother who came to stay." Miss Roberts was born in St. - Louis, but moved to New York City at a young age. A veteran of commer­ cials and Off-Broadway plays,1 she was brought to Hollywood in 1976 by Lily Tomlin, who put her in a pjlot that was never picked up. "But I've worked con­ stantly since then," said Miss Roberts. Most recently she filmed a forthcoming TV movie, "Letter to Three Wives," along with "Remington Steele" cast mate Stephanie Zimbalist. "I play the Thelma Ritter part, which will henceforth be know as the Doris Roberts part." she laughed. Her two most memorable (and diverse) roles were as the outrageous TV evan­ gelist Dorelda Doremus on "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and a bag lady on "St. Elsewhere." for which she won an Emmy. But winning that award was a bittersweet experi­ ence. since her husband, novelist William Goyen.-had died six weeks before the ceremony. "I knew then I could lay down and die. or I could do something with my life.
