Page 11 - PLAINDEALER-HER ALD, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5,1985 New program to help violent crime victims By Angela Burden r Herald Neva Service Convicted violent crime of fenders will be ordered to pay toward assistance programs for victims and witnesses of violent crimes. Such assistance will be offered in McHenry County under a program which begins this week through the Department of J^Durt Services. The department has been awarded a grant to provide services to victims' and wit nesses through the Violent Crime Victims Assistance Fund, & new fund which is financed by fines imposed on convicted offenders. Alan D. Belcher, resource and special services unit supervisor and clinical coordinator for the department, wrote the grant for McHenry County's program in cooperation with other local agencies, and will direct the program. According to Belcher, funding was granted to provide a broad range of services to victims and witnesses. The program's goals are to provide a consortium of agencies and organizations in the community who in turn will provide services to victims. The goals also include the program to establish clear and consistent referral systems, assist the justice system in giving more consideration and personal attention to victim and witnesses of violent crime and to decrease the insidence of unreported crimes. Under the program, victims and witnesses will be informed of the progress of their cases and the public would be en couraged to use the county services. The department is en- devouring to create a public awareness and sensitivity to victims and plans to provide support and assistance to vic tims involved in the court process. * 3 "Far too many people think we have a criminal injustice system," Illinois Attorney General Neil Hartigan said when announcing the grant awards for the services. "The Violent Crime Victims Assistance Fund is a vital step in creating a true victims justice system in Illinois," he said. An 11-member advisory commission for the new state program recommended the McHenry County Court Services Department receive grant money. Under the law, the at torney general serves as chairman of the commission and administers the program. Harvard girl is dairy princess Michelle Schmid, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schmid, Harvard, has been choosen McHenry County Dairy Prin cess for 1985-86, Larry Harris announced. Harris, secretary of the McHenry County . Dairy Promotion Council which has sponsored the Dairy Princess program since 1954, said Michelle will make her first appearance as Dpiry Princess during the Harvard Milk Day parade. Joining her will be Vicki Reese, dairy princess the past year, and the first and second runners-up in this year's competition. They are Jennifer Massett, 17, Huntley, first runner-up, and Linda Ainger, 17, «Harvard, second runner-up. Daughters of dairy farmers, the four women will participate in June Dairy Month < promotions. The annual Dairy Banquet on June 24 will climax the month's activities to boost a major industry in McHenry County^--the production, marketing, manufacturing and distribution of milk and milk products. Michelle lives on a family farm where her father, Ralph; her grandfather, Xavier; and her tincle, Erwin, operate 383 acres and milk 96 Holsteins. Familiar with dairying and milking cows, Linda has had a dairy 4-H project for five years. She has been in 4-H for nine years as a member of the Dunham B-Sharos.'
