Birch trees subject to insect problems White birches are attractive trees that are very popular in landscape situations. Many plantings have been severly crippled or killed by an insect called the bronze birch borer, however. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to protect white birches from the insect pest. The (EXTENSION) People AMml Bronze birch borers live throughout the northern half of the United States and are one of the most important insect pest of trees. Adults are up to one- half inch in length, with a blunt head and a slender, pointed body which is greenish-bronze in color. Larvae, which cause the damage, are about three-fourths of an inch long and have a slight brownish enlargement of the ^ body right behind the head. White birches are damaged by the larvae tunneling right under the bark, creating galleries that girdle branches or trunks. Adults lay eggs in bark crevices and cracks during May and early June. As the larvae hatch, they bore into the trees and begin to cause damage., All species of White birches are susceptible, except for the Whitespire species, which has shown resistance. River birch species are not damaged. Yellowing and thinning of leaves in the upper crown of the tree is' usually the earliest symptom of , damage. Examining large limbs and trunk areas for raised bumps and O-shaped holes can help detect the presence of borers. In advanced cases, dead and broken branches will appear, starting in upper regions of the tree. Look under the bark for galleries and tunnels in these areas. The best defense against borer attack is a healthy, vigorous birth tree. Typical landscape plantings of white birch are under some type of stress, thus are highly susceptible to insect attack. Fertilizing, watering, and mulching the soil all help improve tree health, although trees already damaged cannot return to their original, healthy condition. Remove as much of the dead wood as possible. Proper application of the insecticide dimethoate (Cygon) will control bronze birch borer; Make a first application as close Creativity session set for children at library Raise your children's I.Q., enhance their creativity, prepare them for the high technological age, and make learning fun by enrolling them in a Creativity Summer Session to be conducted at the McHenry Public Library, 1011 N. Because of the unusually warm spring, the first application should be- applied as soon as possible. Another method of applying Cygon, rather than spraying, is to paint a band of the material on the trunk. • Using the Cygon 2E concentrate, apply the material directly out of the container to a white bark portion < f the lower trunk. Make the band six inches wide, around June 1. Birch trees which are already nearly half dead or more, should be removed, as they will never recover and are prime targets for more borers. Replace them with a River birch or the Whitespire white birch variety. For additional information, contact the McHenry County Extension Office at 789 McHenry Avenue, P.O. Box 431, Woodstock, 60098.
