Travelers set to defend title The McHenry Travelers want to defend their Tri- County League divisional Softball championship, and seven returning players key manager Mary Ann Knaack's of doing just that, representing five counties in northern Illinois will participate in the league's second season, which opens Thursday when Algonquin-Lake in the Hills travels for a game at Dundee. McHenry will open its season Sunday with a home game against Sycamore. All home contests will be played at West Campus. Other teams in the league include: Crystal Lake, Marengo, Cary and Genoa in the National League aloni with McHenry an Sycamore; a and Richmond, Huntley, Hebron, Algonquin- LTTH, Dundee and Antioch in the American League. Knaack sees Marengo as the frontrunner in what should be a tight race. Marengo won the league title last season. "Once again, Marengo is the team to beat, however don't overlook the Crystal Lake squad. They came on real strong last year and have turned into a real contender. In the American League, watch out for Antioch and lin," Knaack said, ire does the McHenry unit fit in? "Don't overlook our team. We aren't going to make it easy for anyone. I think we have one of the finest defensive teams i in tjre league. I really don't see a weak spot on the team. Every girl can more than adequately field one or two positions other than her starting spot," Knaack ad­ ded. All 13 of the McHenry team members have been active in high school softball, the McHenry Pigtail League, or both. Returning players are: Monique Betancourt, Toni Fruscella, Gretchen Fuiava, Cindy Gaines, Cindy Kinsala, Renee Mezzano and Andee Norton. Newcomers include: ' Jackie Hutt, Sheri Knaack, Kim Smith, Aleen Tiffany, Jean Westman and Kris Voska. "Offensively, we should be able to hit and score with the best of them. Our speed, both in the field and on the bases is exceptional, and our girls love to steal and take extra Tri-County Softball "Our only question mark might be our pitching, but I'm not really worried about it at this point. We do have five to work with. Only one has pitched regularly, but the others have all pitched at one time or another and are coming along fine." Among those vying for a spot in the pitching rotation are Ffuscella, Gaines, Fuiava, Norton and the coaches' daughter. Assistant coach Pat Norton said she believes this team is rarin' to go. "These kids are ready to play all the time. They nave competed- together for years and do a great job of picking one another up. And they are winners. The nardest part of coaching these kids is trying to convince them that they can't all play at the same time," Norton said. McHenry will compete in the Woodstock Tournament, the Orland Park Tournament, the Roscoe Tournament and the Tri-County Tournament in Richmond. Each team will play a 15-game regular- season schedule. The camp t-shirts will be handed out as soon as possible. .Grades 5-8 should register between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m. on the first day of camp, and grades 9-12 should register between 4:15 and 4:45 the first day. • A typical schedule for the evening session is as follows. The morning session will follow a similar pattern, but things will change from day to day. 5:00-5:15 Daily talk and stretching exercises. JOHNSBURG - Johnsburg High School has announced its dates for the 1985 Skyhawk Basketball Camp. From July 8-12, there will be two sessions per day. One will be for those going into grades 5-8 in the 85-86 school year, which will run from 8 a.m. until noon. Hie evening session, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., will be for those students heading into grades 9-12- Hie camp staff will include coaches from Johnsburg High School ami Johnsburg Junior High, in addition to various guest speakers. Contest will be conducted and awards will be given in the following .areas: 1 on 1; free throws; Hot Shot; Spot Shooting; Mr. Defense; Mr. Hustle; Most Improved; Coaches' Award and MVP. Hie cost is $10 per athlete. The tuition may be given to coach Bill Hurckes at Johnsburg High School, or just bring it along to the first day of camp. Each athlete must bring athletic supporters, socks, 5:15-5:45 Team drills, fast break drills. 5:45-6:15 Games. > 6:15-6:45 Fundamentals, position work, offense-defense. 6:45-7:00 Break. 7:00-7:30 Games. 7:30-8:00 Fundamentals, position work 8:00-8:30 Games. 8:30-9:00 Contests, tour­ naments.
