The new drug consists of a synthetic form of THC, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, the FDA said. i . Studies have shown THC to be effective for many patients who fail to respond to other anti-nausea drugs. "People have elected to die rather than go through the rigors of chemotherapy. Some of it is really horrendous," said Edward Nida, an FDA spokesman. "This (the new drug) is an option. The cancer fatality rate could go down with this." Paul1V. Bollenbacher, president and chief executive officer of Unimed Inc. of Somerville, N.J., manufacturer of the drug, said distribution will begin in about 60 days. Dr. Paul Woolley, associate director for clinical research at Georgetown University's Lombardi Cancer Research Center, said he was not certain the drug would make a dent in the cancer death rate but was delighted it was approved. "It's a good thing to add to our collection of tools," he said. "I think the thing that was most impressive was that some patients who had fail­ ed with other agents responded to this." Woolley, who coordinated testing of the drug at Lombardi, estimated about 10 to 20 percent of chemotherapy patients do not respond to cur­ rently available anti-nausea drugs. The drug, known generically as dronabinol and commercially as Marinol, was found to be especially effective in older patients, he said. The most common side effect was slight sleepiness, he said. Only a few patients experienced euphoria. "You really can't get high," he said, because THC levels in blood are not nearly as high as those produced by smoking marijuana. According to the National Cancer Institute, 50 percent to 75 percent of chemotherapy patients suffer nausea, sometimes accompanied by vomiting. Nearly all require treatment to quell the symptoms. The new drug was tested under supervision of the National Institute of Drug Abuse and was distributed to patients free for almost five years by the Cancer Institute under a program that will end as soon as commer­ cial marketing starts. . Unimed said that in testing, 7 percent of patients discontinued therapy because of more serious side effects, which included anxiety, depres­ sion, dizziness, disorientation, drowsiness, dry mouth, euphoria and hallucinations. The drug consists of soft gelatin capsules containing sesame oil and THC, Bollenbacher said. Bollenbacher said before the drug can be marketed, the Drug En­ forcement Agency must reclassify it from Schedule 1, the most restricted category, to Schedule 2, under which doctors licensed by the DEA can prescribe it. Seven years later, she is producing her own brand of non-alcoholic mouthwash in hopes of helping others avoid her mistakes. "I'm not trying to preach a message to warn the mothers of America that their kids are going to get drunk on mouthwash," said Kelley, 27, a recovering alcoholic for two years. "I just felt there was a real need for this product." Kelley said she began drinking in her freshman year at Stephens Col­ lege in Columbia, Mo. She does not remember much about the town, but remembers all the bars. "I remember I got a C on one of my first exams in college," said Kelley, a straight A student in a Detroit suburb. "Someone said, 'Why don't you get drunk for the final?' and I did. The professor gave me the highest grade he'd ever given any student," she said. She said most mouthwash contains significant amounts of alcohol and many recovering alcoholics cannot use regular mouthwash because they take the drug Antabuse, which makes them violently ill when they drink alcohol.
