NOW APPEARING IN DARK CRYSTAL LOUNGE MEDALLION McHENRY DRUG Seat belt law debate is purely smoke talking here. On tne other side of this debate are the folks who maintain seat belt laws violate their rights. I'll go along with that, I guess. I suppose people have a right to be stupia. And not wearing a seat belt is real stupid. I learned this the hard way one night six years ago. What I got for being stupid aid not go away. It never will. Even if the lawmakers decide to trash the unpopular seat belt law, they'll need the governor's approval, which they're not likely to get. Thompson has Said he will veto any such efforts. Actually, the probably should repeal the mandatory seat belt law. It is only pretending to do something. It is nothing but smoke. Hie seat belt law would have been flushed a long time ago without the support of the big auto makers. These people compromise one of themost powerful lobbies in the entire country and they spend a bundle to get this thing passed in Illinois. Now there is some noise that the car makers may soon be required to install airbags as standard equipment. They should be. Airbags automatically inflate on impact. Diving into an airbag certainly beats having vour face smeared all over the dashboard. In fact, the evidence is now over whelming that airbags would dramatically reduce the mutilation and slaughter on the highways. _ . But the auto makers want no part of it. They claim it would cost too much. They said that about seat belts, too. Now, as born-again champions of seat belt laws, they hope to blunt the airbag movement. Money is same KM? What set of Reader questions council's ability to make decisions Dear Editor: I recently attended the town council meeting on the proposed expansion of the gravel pit. Going into the meeting, my thoughts were neutral. I am very concerned about industrial businesses and jobs in McHenry, but I also have two children who soon will be at tending Valley View School. * After listening to both sides, I chose to agree with the parents and other citizens that the gravel pit should not be ex panded. In listening to all the speakers, I became very well acquainted with Chuck Miller of the gravel pit. Many speakers talked very highly of him. I believe Chuck Miller has been very good for McHennr, but what does this have to do with what's right or wrong with the expansion project; whether he borrowed a front loader to the city of McHenry or donated money to the hospital has nothing to do with re-zoning. After listening to the whole meeting, I was very upset because our council could not even agree or not to vote on this. One alderman wanted to be neutral and another followed. Then a couple wanted to talk to our city attornev. For what? Hadn't they heara enough in five hours that night? .We elected these people to make decision for us Regarding oUtt community. If these aldermen cannot make decisions, I think it's time to elect people who can. This was not a new issue. How much more information did they need? 1 went to this meeting con cerned about the expansion of the gravel pit, when I left I was more c concerned about the city council.
