To get background to play £.Z. Taylor, the oot-in- left-keid cook, .Campbell says. "I found a bunch of surfers. 25 to. 30 years old. and talked with them all day. I tried to pick up at fto lingo and the gesticula tions." He then picked up an outrageous coRgctiorv *of Hawaiian , print shirts from the show's wardrobp lady, (who. admits that 6uylng the garish garb is even more fun than a day at the beach) and watched a few vintage surfer movies to put the finishing touches on-his portrayal. "Hey. surfing's not a Sffort. it's a way of life." says Campbell, momentari ly slipping into his E.Z. rap. "They have simple needs: they |ust want to eat and surl." Campbell admits that he also borrowed liberally from Sean Peon's wacked- out surfer character in the movie "Fast Times at Bidgsmont High." "But he-was a low-ener gy character." Campbell explains. "I didn't think that could be sustained on television. You have to be high-energy to exist next to John RKtgr." ©KM
