Red Cross donations reach $16 million mark In a little more than three months,* Americans have 'reacted by donating more than $16 million to the American Red Cross fund for famine relief. This money was sent im mediately to the League of Red Cross &nd Red Crescent Societies in Switzerland and became part of the $70 million received worldwide to help its workers bring assistance this year to the hardest hit African nations. Contributions move from Red Cross to Red Cross, without deductions for overhead of fund- SCOUT VOLUNTEERS Several area residents were among those recognized for service to Girl Scouting at the recently-held Sybaquay Girl Scout Council Annual Meeting. Relief supplies remain in the hands of Red Cross workers throughout the feeding operations, and steps are taken to ensure fair distribution of food to the starving. All Red Cross relief supplies are reaching their destinations without in terference from outside elements. Red Cross doctors and nurses are carrying on educational programs in sanitation and nutrition. To accomplish this, the Red Cross is employing more than 1,000 volunteers from African Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, providing them with basic training in these areas. There still is a terrible need on the African continent. However, the people of the United States and other countries have reacted with compassion, concern and generosity. Hope is being restored in these suffering African people. You may continue to GIVE tturough your local Mo&piry County Chapter of the American Red Cross le: located at 209 N. Kreiter United Press International CHICAGO -- Declaring the "dream is dead," World Fair Authority General Manager John Kramer and Executive Director James W. Compton said Thursday they will recommend all planning for the 1992 exposition in Chicago to end. Kramer told a news conference at the authority's downtown head quarters there were not enough votes in the Illinois House to approve funding for the project. "I think it is something that is very unfortunate," said Kramer. "It is sad for the city and sad for the state." Kramer said he told Gov. James R. Thompson Thursday morning it would be unfair for Kramer and his associates to continue to ask Thomp son and Senate President Philip Rock to continue the fight for the fair- ^ "I think it is unfair to ask them to jeopardize other programs and priorities," the former transporta tion secretary said. Kramer said there have been in formal overtures from Miami and Los Angeles to pick up Chicago's mandate. He also ruled out bringing the matter up before a fall veto ses sion. Punjabi Brothers Lounge was given a one-week suspension that began Monday, June 17 by the com mission, stemming from an incident in May. According to the report of the last commission meeting, two Woodsock police officers testified that on Tues day, May 9 they saw patrons having jlWBks at the bar at 1:31 a.m. Under city law, a tavern must close at 1 a.m. on a weeknight, and at 2 a.m. on weekends. A1 Lohdi, the holder of the Punjabi Bros, liquor license, had been of ficially warned by the commission in April for the same after-hours viola tions. The commission members -- Mayor Jim Shoemaker, Jim Fogar- ty, Tom Rausch, Dale Widmayer and Shirley Schiller -- voted unanimously for the one-week suspension at the commission's May 20 meeting. "We should not have to remind them when closing time is," heaaid. If bar owners are having a problem clearing out patrons as closing time approaches, "we'd be happy to come down," the chief said.
