Arson the target this week This week Crime Stoppers is seeking information on an arson related fire that gutted the kitchen of an apartment in Marengo. 1-800-762-STOP At 34 minutes past midnight on Thursday, June 6 Marengo police and fire units responded to the apartment building at 16 E. Prairie St. in Marengo. When they arrived, they found the kitchen of apartment No. 3 engulfed in flames. The apartment had been vacant for more than 2 months and due to the suspicious nature of the fire, arson investigators were called in. It was quickly determined that the fire had been deliberately set. Between three and . five thousand dollars worth of damage was done to the apart ment and the lives of the. building's other occupants were endangered. Arson is always a serious crime, but it is even more so when innocent lives are held in the balance. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for in formation leading to the arrest and filing of criminal charges against offenders. If you have any information on this arson in Marengo, or in formation on any other crimes, Farm Bureau board backs county landfill call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762- STOP. All callers remain anonymous-one never needs to give a name. Crime Stoppers, which is sponsored by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce, assigns secret numbers to anonymous callers who provide in formation. Callers are in structed to call back at regular intervals to find out if any suspects have been arrested as a result of confidential in formation given. If there are arrests, the Crime Stoppers board of directors then meets to determine an ap propriate award. A secret meeting is arranged to make the cash reward payments. Anonymous callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to appear in court. r Members of the 1985 4-H Royalty Court Viewing for 4-H King are left to right: James Gratz, Harvard; Robert Heaver, Hebron; Jamie Martin, Harvard; Steve Smith, McHenry; Dave Behrens, Crystal Lake; and Keith Borchardt, Wonder Lake. Cigarette tax could be used for education The State of Illinois spent over $15 million in 1982 for direct health care costs caused by smoking. This does not include costs such as shorter lifespan or more time off from work due to illness. Governor Thompson has proposed that additional money for education could come from an 8-cent-a pack tax on cigarettes. Education will be improved and teenagers will be discouraged from smoking by zarette taxes.
