Try to imagine what life would be like without summertime. Twelve months of cold. It's not a pretty thought. •Think about it. You'd have no need for stylish corduroy shorts or Hawaiian shirts. Suntan oil would be obsolete, sunglasses a nonentity. •You wouldn't know how to swim, either, because having never gone for a dip outside, there'd be no such things as indoor swimming pools. •Consequently, we'd have never heard of bikinis or superstud Speedo swimwear. Fantasies of Christie Brinkley or Tom Selleck would contain visions of them in a possum fur coat and awoolhat. •You would never roll down your car windows, except to go through the fast food drive-thru. v •You'd never wear short sleeve shirts. •You'd save money on your electric bill, too, because you'd have no need for an air conditioner. •No need for a-c in the car, either. Instead there'd be portable blow torches sold with every automobile. •There'd be no beef about putting lights in at Wrigley Field, because all stadiums would be domed so as to protect the fans from the year-round chill. •Kool-Aid would be useless, as would lemonade. Who needs to cool off in the winter? Popsides? Hah. Ice cream? What would be the use? Consequently, people probably wouldn\be as overweight. •Mountain Dew would go out of business, because of 4ack of fodder for those commercials where people ride their bikes into the creek on blistering hot days. •We'd think a beer garden was something in which you planted empty cans of Blatz. •There'd be no such thing as frisbee-catching dogs, because there'd be no beaches on which to play frisbee. •Summerfest, ChicagoFest, EatFest, DrinkFest, and FestFest all would be erased from the schedule. •Instead of waxing your surfboard in your free time, you'd be knitting an extra pair of wool socks. •We'd never see another Battle of the Network Stars because without warmth, the participants couldn't wear those skimpy outfits. Then, there's really no show. •We'd have never heard of Carl Lewis or Edwin Moses or Mary Lou Retton, unless they could learn to luge or ice dance or play hockey. •We would never have heard of movies like 'Friday the 13th' or 'Porky's.' Those are 'summer' movies, designed to appeal to the teenage audience. No warm weather, no dopey summer movies. •Teenagers would also be out of work. There'd be no such thing as a 'summer job.' •Little kids wouldn't have to suffer through the first day of every school year by writing essays entitled: 'What I Did On My Summer Vacation.' •We'd have a different list of Miss Americas. The winner from a few years back was named Summer Bartholomew. She wouldn't have won. •Most men would have longer hair. They'd never say, Oh, I just want to get it cut short for the summer.' •The list of the various types of sausage would be lessened by one. •One of the classic 'coming-of-age' movies would never have been. 'Summer of '42' would have been shot on location in Siberia or somewhere, and the whole story line would have changed. • •There'd be no such thing as the 'summertime blues.' •Motorcycles would be non-existent, as would bicycles. Along those same lines, Evel Knievel would have a normal first name. •You'd have a hard time sweating. •The back of your legs would never stick to your vinyl car seat. Some of the above things would be difficult to live with or without. Others might do us all some good. Still, without sum mer and hot weather, our lives would be radically different. With that, you must agree. And what of summer activities like volleyball, tennis and golf? And how 'bout the ever-popular bocce ball, the Italian- rooted game for which I believe one of my uncles stays up nights plotting ways to cheat? He makes up new rules every time we play. You'd think he invented the game. What would become of them if someone were to cancel summer? And fur thermore, what would my uncle cheat at? Luckily for all, there's no need to worry. Every June 21, we're told the first day of summer has officially arrived. And, every June 20,1 get a little nervous. Always have. What if It turns cold? What If summer never comes? What if I have to wear earmuffs on the fourth of July? But again, summer has arrived, and it'll be around for 70 or so more days. Don't let it slip by you. You never know what next June 21 will bring. Next time you curse the hot weather, about how terribly hot and sticky the weather is, drag this list out. Then smile. And apologize to Mom Nature.
