Travel tips offered by AAA Travelers who fear a bad vacation instead of preparing for a happy one might benefit from some careful pre-trip planning, according to the AAA- Chicago Motor Club. Planning can help to make your trip both enjoyable and economical, says the AAA-CMC, and good planning starts before you leave. First, decide how much money you'll spend on your vacation. Then, set a pace and a schedule to suit your personal vacation ideal. The AAA-CMC advises vacationers to ask in advance to make sure that their hotel, motel or campgound welcomes children or pets, and to make reservations well ahead of time to avoid the seasonal crush. Once the main plans have been laid, the AAA-CMC suggests that you look into trip essentials early. International travelers should be aware that a passport application takes three to five weeks to process in the spring and summer. If you don't have a major credit card for identification and emergencies, you might consider applying for one of those, also. The AAA-CMC offers several home security ideas that should be arranged before a trip for a worry-free vacation. You should: Stop deliveries of newspapers and mail; arrange for the care of your7 lawn, garden, houseplants and pets; lock doors and windows; connect lights and a radio to electric timers to foil burglars; and turn down the volume of the telephone bell, but do not disconnect it. Some burglars use the phone to make sure that their victim isn't home. Leave curtains and shades partially drawn; set ther mostats at an energy conserving temperature; leave a housekey and your trip itinerary including phone numbers with a trusted relative, neighbor or friend; make sure car registrations, driver's licenses, auto insurance policies and motor club mem bership won't expire while you are on the road; and update innoculations and health records, especially for children.
