PLAINDEALER -HERALD. JJCTION^PAG^PUINDE ̂ SECTION 2 Committee gears for next year fe'V It's mosquito time in McHenry area The McHenry County Department of Health reminds all citizens that those living in the area with large amounts of surface waters such as McHenry County, have mosquitoes with which to contend. McHenry County primarily has three types of mosquitoes- the Flood Water (temporary pool) Mosquito, the Treehold Mosquito and the Northern House Mosquito makes up about 85 percent of our mosquito population and lays their eggs in areas which will flood at a later date. Flood Mosquitoes include some of {he most obnoxious biters and serve to discourage individuals from using backyards and recreational areas due to their biting. The Northern House Mosquito deposits its egg directly on the water surfaces and present a greater health hazard since it is the potential transmitter of the St. Louis Encephalitis virus. It has a short flight range and remains fairly close to its breeding sites, normally being out only in the evening or at dusk. The Northern House Mosquito population can be held down if we take the following preventive measures on our own properties, and Municipalities and Government Units having parks and recreational areas take these preventive measures on those properties as well: -Turn all receptacles such as tubs, flower vases, etc. upside down to prevent the collection of water in them. -Remove all temporary water containers and dispose of all tin cans. v -Store bicycle and auto tires indoors after emptying them of water. -Screen or tightly cover rain barrels and openings to water tanks, tubs or cisterns. If screening is used, it should be of 16 inch. -Repair leaking plumbing and outside faucets. The newly-created Fiesta Days Board presents its first Fiesta Days production with the promise of much entertainment as a theme. " The board has responded to the requests of the community in strengthening the parade providing more bands with more kinds of music and reducing the number of days in the Fiesta. Its plans for next year's festival are also a response to requests from the community. The Drum Corps show, which has not been held for the last four years, hopefully-will be returned in 1988. a committee of Drum Corps people are already pursuing the ratification of this endeavor. Thecommitte hopes to bring a good quality Drum Corps show back to McHenry for 1986 Fiesta Days and believes it will be an excellent gift to the city, because it is McHenry's 150th birthday next year. In order to accomplish this endeavor, a fund must be acquired to underwrite the cost of the show. Therefore, a $1 donation will be asked at the for Food Fiesta and Banjo Night during Fiesta Days this year. The committee believes these proceeds will be adequate to fund the Drum Corps show and simultaneously produce caliber of parade that we have been lacking since the concellation of the Drum Corps shows. The committee wishes to The 10th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry (Illinois State Militia) is a black powder com petitive shooting organization orientated to the Civil War motif. The addition of a twelve to fifteen (12-15) member marching unit, dressed in authentically reproduced Civil War (Federal) uniforms, and carrying black powder muskets and Civil War Battle flags will add additional color and excitement to the Fiesta Days Parade. make it clear that it is a one time charge and hand stamps will permit individuals to come back in the gate without being asked for another donation. On Food Fiesta Day, a souvenir cup will be given to the first 10,000 adults through the gate at Petersen Park beach, in return for their $1 donation. The committee trusts the community is as excited about the prospect of the return of Drum Corps Magic to McHenry as they are. Plans are moving on a very positive path and there is every indication that Fiesta Days, 1986 will be climaxed by the return of the Drum Corps show. However, should that become impossible, the fund created with the $1 donation will be used to underwrite a sub stitute show in honor of our Sesquicentennial. Anyone wishing to work on the committee dedicated to the return of the Drum Corps show is urged to call Chairman Tom Low at 385-7626. "Let Us En tertain You" is the theme for 1985, but the efforts of the Fiesta Days Board are extending into 1986 already. Complete details of all the exciting 1985 Fiesta Days events are included in the Fiesta Days Guide, which is being mailed this week. The Fiesta Days Board of Directors commends Fiesta Days Guide Chairman, Debbie Cajthaml, for the outstanding job she has done on the 1985 edition, and encourages everyone to retain their copies for reference throughout Fiest Days. Should any resident in the McHenry, Wonder Lake, and Ringwood area not have received a Guide, they can drop by the Chamber office to pick one up at 1257 N. Prior to that time, each Township Weed Commissioner was responsible for eradication of the designated Noxious Weeds. These individuals were known as "Thistle Com missioners" because Canada Thistle was the most offensive of weeds to farmers. In July 1972, the Illinois Noxious Weed Law went into effect after having been passed by the Illinois General Assembly. -According to this Law, a County Superintendent of Noxious Weeds was to be ap pointed by the County Board. In August 1972, a member of the Health Department Staff was appointed as Noxious Weed Superintendent. By Law, eight species of weeds have been designated and declared noxious weeds. These include Marijuana, Canada Thistle, Perennial Sow Thistle, the Sorghum Weed such as Johnson Grass, Giant Ragweed and Common Ragweed. McHenry County Health Department Staff respond to complaints by making field observations and inspecting for and indentifying Noxious Weeds. When Noxious Weeds are found, owners of the property are notified that the weeds must be eradicated within ten (10) days. Failure of the property owner to eradicate the weeds will result in the Health Department making arrangements to have the weeds cut and bill the owner for the cost involved. If the owner does not pay those costs, a lien is placed against the property until the property owner pays the cost of destroying die weeds. During the Spring and Summer of 1984, 647 Noxious Weed Investigations were made by Health Department Staff. Two hundred ninety-two properties were found to have Noxious Weeds growing on them and were required to have those weeds destroyed. DELL LIQUORS ® • MERCHANTS Of FIN( WINES AND LIQUORS 4610W.
