Every Bimbo's player contributed some of fense to the victory. Paul Adams led the way with a S-for-3 performance. Adams, Ed Mack and Bob Doran each provided two RBI. Carey Electric*, Old Bridge m* Despite an early 6-0 advantage for the Old Bridge III, Carey Electric hung In and rallied to win, 9-6. Larry Oeffllng and Mark Fredericks put the Old Bridge ahead 2-0 with RBI singles. Fredericks later added another run-scoring hit. A two-run double from Kelly then gave the Old Bridge a six-run edge. But Tom Carey brought his team back, break ing up the shutout bid with a two-run homer In ByJoelUuzzl UPI sports writer NEW YORK -- Every so often a player comes along and causes people to turn around and take notice of him. In the Roaring '20s, people jam med stadiums to watch Babe Ruth swat home runs. In 1976, Mark Fidrych packed them in as he entertained fans with his zany an tics on the mound. This season, people are running to the ball park to watch Vince Coleman run the bases. Coleman, the exciting 23-year- old St. Louis rookie, has caught the fancy of baseball fans around the country with his daring base running. More important, he has breathed new life into the Car dinals. Before the Cardinals brought up Coleman from the minors in the second week of the season, they had a 2-5 record and their offense was sagging. But since then, St. Louis has gone 32-21, is just two games out of first place in the Na tional League East, and leads the league in hitting. Coleman made his presence felt the sixth. Old Bridge then fell apart, giving up six walks to help Carey Electric win. LandKapws 18, CuOom Kaoll m S Fireworks exploded for the Landscapers in a 15-3 blowout of Cullom Knoll III. The Knoll got all three runs In one fell swoop, a three-run homer off the bat of Steve Hutt. But the Landscapers came back, with Jeff and Steve Major each going 3-for-4. Jeff had a two- run homer and later added a grand slam to ac count for six RBI. Steve hit a two-run homer and immediately, stealing two bases against Montreal in his major- league debut April 18. Through this week, the speedy outfielder had stolen 42 bases in 54 attempts over 51 games. He also scored 44 runs while batting .274. As the leadoff hitter, Coleman has had a tremendous impact on the entire lineup. Coleman distracts pitchers so much when he gets on, it forces them to feed the batters behind him a steady diet of fastballs. Tom Herr (.362), the No. 3 hitter in the order, and Willie McGee (.345), who bats se cond, are the top two hitters in the National League. Meanwhile, Herr and cleanup hitter Jack Clark lead the NL in RBI with 52 and 50, respectively. You could partly attribute the success of Herr, McGee and Clark to Coleman. Herr, who has already surpassed his previous season-high RBI totab, started the year in the leadoff spot, but was dropped to third by Manager Whitey Herzog after Coleman's arrival. That has paved the way for more RBI opportunities. Before Coleman came, Herr was averaging an RBI every two another run-scoring hit. John'* Sport Stop 11, God Squad 10 John's Sport Stop got out to an early lead, and needed every run In a close, well-played win over God Squad, 11-10. Bob Mellck and Jerry Balchunas drove In ear ly runs for the winners t Henry Gltck and Tom Cunningham helped the God Squad back Into the fray with RBI singles, but Dave Bauer's home run and a sacrifice fly by Jim Shallow allowed John's to capture the win. games. Now he's averaging near ly one a game. McGee, who opened the season in the No. 3 slot, says having Col eman in the lineup has helped make him a better hitter. "With Vince Coleman on base, I take the first pitch and let him run," said McGee, who has hit .369 since Coleman's been up. "I'm not hacking. I take until they throw me a strike. I'm the same type of hitter. I'm still aggressive. But I'm more aggressive on better pit ches." Clark has hit 12 of his 14 home runs since Coleman started play ing. Coleman, who set the pro baseball record for steals (145) two years ago with Macon in the South Atlantic League, poses a threat to Rickey Henderson's major-league record of 130. Coleman and McGee are the top basestealers in the NL and St. Louis, through 60 games, has stolen 118 bases. The Cardinals, who swiped 220 last year, have a slight chance of breaking the major-league record of 347 set by the 1911 New York Giants. Former Cardinal Lou Brock, the greatest base-stealer of all time, is impressed with Coleman,^ " F o r a n y s u c c e s s f u l basestealer, two questions lie in that success," said Brock, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. "One, how long will he last?; and two, what will he do next? "This kid has already answered what he's gonna do next. Every time they think they have him..."
