Pag* 10 McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Wednesday, July 10, 1983 Mothers Club influential in building fund for library FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 11, 1935) The people of McHenry will soon have a public library if efforts of members of the Mothers Club can make such a thing possible and on Friday, July 19, they wiH sponsor a drive for books and funds' in their initial efforts to change their dream of a library into a reality. The members will make a systematized house to house soliticitation throughout McHenry for books or for money towards the library fund ana they are asking local residents to look over their books for donation or decide on an amount of money to be donated. Scouts Jack Hess, Bruce Klontz and Harold Taxman have been given the honor of representing Troop 162 at the Great National Scout Jamboree, to be held in Washington the last 10 days of August, when 30,000 Scouts from all parts of the country will be encamped at the nation's capital, the greatest boy-get-together in American history. Greeted by a cloudless sky which was welcomed after several rainy days, McHenry observed the celebration of the nation's 159th birthday quietly on Thursday, although the streets, as well as surrounding resorts, were crowded with vacationers and visitors. Temperature records for the 1935 were shattered when a it wave with accompanying humidity arrived for the fourth, making conditions most un­ comfortable. New exhibit at fair site A new exhibit is nearing completion in time for the 1985 McHenry County Fair July 31- August 4 at Woodstock. A 60-foot by 120-foot building has been erected by McHenry FSonthe site of the former goat barn, the first building erected for the fair when it was revived in 1949 after a quarter century absence. Peter . Reiland, fair vice president, said the new Building G is one of the four exhibit halls. Others include Building A, an original exhibit building con­ structed in the early 1950s; Building D, the air conditioned building with a tile floor; and Building B, another early building constructed to the west of Building D. Reiland said all inside space has been rented, and the im­ proved location of the exhibitors as they prepare for the estimated 100,000 people that will crowd the grounds. She is the former Barbara > Miller. She is 83, and Mr. Lawrence is 85. They have four children: Mrs. Joseph Wegener and William Lawrence of McHenry and Joseph and Oliver Lawrence of Ringwood. Herb Reihansperger arrived home Sunday from Fort Lewis, Wash. He has received his medical discharge from the army following a serious illness three months ago. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 7, 1960) Green Street businessmen presented a petition signed by more than 30 property owners and business people recom­ mending that a bndge to the east of tne existing Green Street bridge is needed to handle the flow of traffic from south of the city of McHenry and from the schools lying south of Boone Creek. They said they believed such a bridge will be an absolute necessity within the next five to 10 years. James M. Lennon, president of McHenry hospital took the maternity department. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 9, 1975) Frey Meyer, superintendent of public works for the city, has been selected to lead the Marine Festival parade this year. Meyer's many contributions to his city, among them the organization of the city's first Little League. In 1956 he was awarded tne Citizen of the Year award by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in conjunction with the annual VJ day celebration. He was born in McHenry, graduated from St. Mary's grade school and McHenry high school. He served in the Army in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He is married to the former Catherine "Tinky" Rothermel.
