I, McHENRY PLAINOEALER S^tlooA WadnMday, July '0. w* Pag* 12 McHENRY PLAinuc^wti* Church has finger-lickin' good chicken With no plan or great idea for a column this week, let s call it "Rambling On." I picked up one of those head colds that can't be controlled without tying a towel around your nose. Happiness permeated the air as a large crowd gathered to surprise our backyard neighbor, Mary Beth Harbecke, on her birthday. We hear her mother, vivacious Mrs. Williams, planned the party. Wow! What a We were glad to hear good news of the health and happiness of Bruce Harbecke's parents who now make their home in Florida. Speaking of feasts - the annual chicken dinner at Methodist Church in Ringwood will be held July 20. That is always finger-lickin' good and McHenry is always well represented at the dinner. ! Of course, I always have to jgive the men credit for standing over a hot fire to fry the chicken. Hate to think that we White Sox fans may have to start singing the old refrain "Wait 'Til Next Year." We have hopes, but not enough base hits. So I Hear by Earl Walsh But So Hard To Forget." Well, I must try to generate some kindness and best wishes for those dear Cub fans friends of ours. Their team really bounced back with big sticks. No worry about corn being knee-high by the Fourth of July. For two weeks is has been way up to your you-know-what. I'll soon be looking for some of that old time Golden Bantam sweet corn. Those small ears went out of style when people wanted long ones. More for their money. an amusing report on college reunions. OLD SAYINGS No news is good news. A pain is nothing to compare with hurt. If you would judge others, be prepared to be judged. There never was an old shoe there wasn't a sock to fit it. I got carried away and wrote too much last week, then the , make-up artist couldn't find room to fit in some paragraphs. When recalling McHenry had a saloon on every corner and two more in the block, I mentioned the free lunches on the bar. Patrons found hard-boiled eggs, cold meat and other snacks. Another missing note was: Ladies were not allowed in barrooms, but could use the "Family Entrance" on the side of the building. Not many were bold enough to enter. Might as well pick up some of those missing notes. It will help round out a column for this week. recalling earlier days, I mtioned those were the days oi country stores. Hardware stores sold hardware. Drug stores dispensed prescription drugs. Grocery stores sold groceries. Meat markets sold meat. Clothing stores sold clothing. You can go down the line. Today most business places are in everybody else's business. The pace was slower in those days. No radio, no television. Very few had furnaces. Fewer had bathtubs. Eating in a restaurant was a rare event. Walking to the depot on Sunday night to watch the crowds board the train for Chicago, after a weekend in the country, was a recreational treat. Old clipping.
