PHONE CREDIT GTE is offering one hour of free long-distance calls to Chicago metropolitan area residents and businesses selecting Sprint as their primary long-distance service. The offer is directed to customers in the greater Chicago areas who became eligible for equal access dialing during Julv, August, and Sep tember of 1985. To qualify, customers must sign up prior to their equal access conversion date, set by the local telephone company. The one hour of free calls is based on sprint's night, weekend coast-to-coast rates. HOUSING PERMITS UP Housing permit activity in the seven-county Chicago metropolitan area increased 28 percent in May 1965 over the same month period one year ago, according to the monthly "Bell Federal Survey of Building." All housing, in cluding single family homes and apartments, rose from 2,683 to 3,409 in May. In McHenry, building permits totaled $2.4 million in May 1964, up from $1.2 million for the same period last year. Building permits for homes in McHenry were 11 for the month of May this year, down from 18 for the previous year's period. The only slump occurred in single family home buying, which experienced a 5 percent decrease this year. Only 1,740 home units for single families were bought in May 1985 com pared to the 1,830 bought for the previous year's period. Permits for multi-family housing, however, doubled, from 833 units in May 1964 to 1,669 this year. From January to May this year total new housing activity increased 25 percent. Permits were issued for 9,742 total housing units compared to the 7,791 units during the same five month period of 1984. Single family housing increased from 5,435 to 5,484, an almost 1 per cent increase. Multi-family housing totaled 4,258 units while last year's figures settled at 2,356 units, an 81 percent in crease. GENEALOGICAL MEETING The McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society is holding their monthly meeting on July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Central High School Cafeteria, Crystal Lake, Hie featured topic will be "One Way to Keep Genealogical Records." Next month's meeting will be on Aug. 8 at the same place and the same time. The program will be announced. Topics to be covered include identifying and handling the intoxicated patron, promotion programs which enhance business image, and responsible service of alcohol. BANKWINSBID The McHenry County Public Building Commission accepted a bid from the McHenry State Bank to finance costs of the $3.4 million Public Building revenue bonds sold June 20. Bidding in conjunction with a Chicago- based investment banking firm, the McHenry State Bank was the successful bidder for the bonds, offering the Commission an overall 8.215 percent rate for the issue. According to a bank spokesman, the bank's bid will save county tax payers over $110,000 - over the fife of the issue - versus the cost of the next highest bidding group. Proceeds of the issue will be used for County Courthouse related construction in Woodstock.
