Rock and roll's soap opera gears up for another season By Justin Mitchell Scripps Howard News Service One of rock 'n* roll's longest run ning melodramas has hit the road again. Since their debut at Wood stock in 1969, David Crosby, Ste phen Stills, Graham Nash and occa sional comrade Neil Young have had as much publicity for their mu sic as for their personal problems and differences. It's no different in 1985, with Cros by's continuing legal conflicts pro viding the fodder. The group was seen around the world performing at the Live Aid concert. Nash did most of the interviews prior to the current tour and frankly discussed how his friend's difficul ties have affected the group. Crosby, 44, is free on appeal bond while the Texas Supreme Court con siders his conviction for cocaine possession and illegally carrying a loaded gun. Earlier this year he served three months in several jails for escaping from a New Jersey drug rehabilitation center. loving and supportive." One of those times was at 1:30 on a May morning thisyeaj^freH Nash bailed Crosby out of the Dallas jail after his exit from the New Jersey rehabilitation center. "Have you ever seen the Dallas jail at 1:30 on a weekend morning?" Nash asked. Well, no. But one ima gines it is doing lot of business. "'A lot of business' you say!" Nash exclaimed, sounding just a little indignant. "Does the term 'central casting' mean anything to. you? I saw some people there straight from central casting, scenes right out of Dante's Inferno. Crosby didn't fit in there at all." Nash's extra-curricular press comes from his environmental and political concerns. There's a reason for that, he said. Fan won't take no for answer United Press International STl'RGIS. Mich. -- Jack Van Schoick refuses to take "no" for an answer to his request for adding President Reagan's face to the col lection of great Americans on Mount Rushmore. His answer from Washington Tuesday was official but hardly encouraging. "The letter was pretty much hopeless." he said of the'Interior Department's negative reply. Popular response to the idea has been about even for and against, and mail has been tapering off since his idea first gained national promi nence several -weeks ago. Van Schoick said. But he remains determined. Hubert Humphrey wanted to put Franklin Roosevelt's face in granite on the mountain in 1949. If Hum phrey thought it was possible, there might be a chance, he said. < "I haven't given up. I don't think the idea will ever die." he said. "It was interesting to look at the negative responses. I discarded the ones that showed a high degree of prejudice and selfishness." he said. But Van Schoick is looking beyond this week's mail. If a person looks ahead a thou sand years, the idea of immortaliz ing a 20th century president on the face of Mount Rushmore doesn't seem so ridiculous, he said. I I ARE YOU NEW IN The McHenry Area?
