Keeping up with the Jones' isn't just a middle class adult phenome non anymore. Chances are your child is just as susceptible as you are. j ' And, one of the newest trends for today's youth in the transportation category is the motor scooter, a two- wheeled vehicle as different from the motorcycle as the Porsche is from the station wagon. In fact, if current sales figures are any indication, owning a motor scooter may soon be as popular among America's youth as the music personalities who promote them, .including Graqp Jones, Adam Ant, Devo and Berlin. According to American Honda Motor Companu^Inc., leader in the industry, scodfejl- sales have in creased dramatically ir\ the past Sometimes you can save money by throwing things away. By not using things such as tires till they are too worn to work well may well save you dollars--and per haps even save you from an accident. ere twelve months. "We have seen a 250% increase in sales in the past year," explained Neil Leventhal, motor scooter man ager at Honda. "Honda is the indus try leader, and since entering the market in 1983, we've sold more than the entire industry sold over the preceding 20 years." And who is buying the scooters? According to Leventhal, almost half the scooters were bought by the under-25 age category. The other half of sales are evenly spread through all age groups, from the young urban professional to the grandmother. "Scooter buyers are active, energetic and willing to try new things," Leventhal said. 'They Grace Jones and Adam Ant show America that keeping up with the Jones' isn't just a middle class adult phenomenon anymore. have a desire for easy, fun-to-ride transportation." Other characteristics include: * 279f are students, but 28*/? de scribe themselves as professionals or managers. e They are impulse buyers, with the majority deciding to buy the scooter in less than a week. * 34% are female. Honda predicts that sales will continue to increase, with projected industry sales for 1985 pegged at more than 125,000. With figures like that, the likeli hood of a scooter in your future--or, your son's or daughter's future--is very good. Since all pneumatic tire and wheel combinations store large amounts of energy, re use of worn out or corroded truck wheels can cause seri ous injury. Before re-use, every wheel should be in spected. If it is corroded to the point that there are visible pits in the metal, or if any locking surface is bent or cracked, or if any parts do not match, the wheel should be scrapped so as to prevent re use When in any doubt, scrap the wheel Any wheel with a manufac turing date older than 15 years is probably worn out, say the wheel experts at The Budd Company Newer wheels can be worn too, if they have seen rough service Never work on a truck tire or wheel unless you are prop erly trained and have read and follow OSHA regulation Section 1910.177 and wheel manufacturer's literature. WASHINGTON -- The chairman of the Nation al Transportation Safety Board says states play a dangerous game when they fail to regularly in spect bridges and make the necessary repairs. Jim Burnett, in Atlanta for hearings on bridge safety, said on ABC's "Good Morning America" program that a bridge collapse in Connecticut killed several people. He said fortunately no one was injured when a bridge collapsed in Alabama in April. "Many bridges have to be inspected under water in order to know whether they're safe or not," Burnett said. "Even though federal guide lines call for an inspection under water of such bridges every five years, many of them, in fact, are not being inspected." Burnett said testimony at the public hearings show that many states fail to follow guidelines set by the Federal Highway Administration. But he added it still is uncertain how many of the half million bridges across the country are in danger ous condition. "Well, we really don't know," Burnett said. Saab sales climb high Sales of the Swedish- made Saab cars in the United States climbed 20.3 percent in June to 4,021, up from 3,342 in June last year. This is higher than in any previous month in the company's history and represents the 39th consecutive monthly sales record for Saab- Scania of America. During the first six months this year, Saab dealers retailed 19,763 cars, an increase of 11.2 percent over the 17,767 Saab cars sold d u r i n g t h e s a m e period last year. Additionally, Saab Overseas Deliveries, which are Saab cars s o l d b y A m e r i c a n dealers but delivered to American travelers in Europe, climbed to 203 in June, bringing the six month total to 537 -- an increase of 41 percent over the same period last year. S a a b - S c a n i a o f America is targeting sales of its sports sedans to total 38,000 for calendar year 1965. The United States is Saab's largest single market. ©1985 by NEA. Burnett said states have the initial responsibil ity for bridge repairs and maintenance. But he said recommendations or specific actions will not be determined until after the hearings. George Mair, an author and bridge expert who joined Burnett on the program, said 46 people died when a bridge collapsed in West Virginia, considered the worse such incident in this decade. According to Mair, the most dangerous bridges are located in Beaumont, Texas, New York City, Tampa Bay, Fla., Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Kan., Pittsburgh and Pulaski Coun ty, Ky. But Mair said elected officials have problems setting bridge repairs and maintenance as a priority. He said tight budgets would force states to reduce personnel or budgets in key areas, such as law enforcement, just to hire more bridge inspectors. "Many bridges are not inspected regularly, No. l," Mair said. "No. 2, bridge inspection is not a high priority for many transportation depart ments. It's not the kind of a job that people go to MIT (Massacusetts Institute of Technology) and expect to be as a lifetime career. "Most politicians don't think that any major bridges are going to fall down in their time." I -COUPON" AIR CONDITIONING •system Hosts * seel extra. Exp.
