TRADE-IN ALLOWANCE Holy name society takes up sides for baseball FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 25, 1935) The Holy Name society of St. Mary's church will again put on one of those thrilling and mirth- ball games July 29. Very Rev. Msgr. C.R. Nix, pastor of St. Mary's church, will Itch and George Barbian will the catcher on one team. The team will feel the loss Father Dommersmuth, who pitched last year, but they are forturnate to get Urban 'Red Faber, former White Sox pitcher who will try his luck at indoor ball. Other players on Msgr. Nix's team are Joe N. Miller, John Stock, Stephen H. Freund, Pete Justen, Louis Althoff, Mike Schaefer and Phil Guinto. Opposing team players in­ clude A.P. Freund who will catch, and Jake and Henry Schafer, Nick Weingart, Jake Freund, Will Althoff and out­ fielders Herman Steffes and Leo Meyers. Umpires will be Charles Peterson, world's light heavyweight champion wrestler, and John Bolger of McHenry. Student tuition and relief funds for educational purposes will pay for two teachers and a supervisor for college courses offered this year at McHenry Community High School. The work will probably take the form of correspondence courses under the supervision of the teachers FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 26, 1945) Among the first McHenry area men to be welcomed home from service in World War II because of age, physical disabilities and the point system was Sgt. Robert Doran a Mc- Cullom Lake soldier who served five years in the Army, three of those in qombat in the Pacific. Also returning were LaVern Harrison and Walter Kreutzer. Harrison was injured on a coral wice while fighting with the marines. Those released on the point system were Arnold Larson, George Kinsala, and Lloyd Whiting, all of the army. Women released from service included Lieut. Eleanor Althoff Wister of the army nurse corps and WAVE Jerry Becker Doran. A 1945 Illinois corn crop of 365,484,000 bushels, 11 percent under last year's and smallest since the drought of 1936 was forecast by the state and federal agriculture departments. Flight Officer Howard Heidemann had the thrill of riding in the same plane with General Eisenhower a short time ago. A pilot, Howard left several months seas. is ago for over- reef in the Pacific and Kreutze received bullet wounds in his foot while on duty on Europe. Two cousins, George and Neil Thurlwell, received honorabel discharges earlier in the war and the Steinsdoerfer brothers, Alvin and Leonard, have been released recently with medical discharges. Nye, former McHenry physician, arrived in Chicago on Monday, after spending the past 18 months in the Pacific, e and Mrs. Nye returned to McHenrv on Tuesday, where he met for the first time his daughter, almost a year old. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1960) Two barns, oife containing a three-car garage at one end were destroyed by flames last Thursday on the Northern Pump Company farm at the in­ tersection of Ringwood and McCullom Lake roads, known as Smith corners. Hie loss was estimated at about $100,000 by Brad Scott, manager of the farm. The origin of the blaze, which broke out about 4:15 p.m. is still not known. Members of the McHenry Plan Commission heard new ideas to solve the, central business district traffic problem when they met at city hall Monday. Three alternatives plans were presented by the planning firm of Stanton & Rockwell to ease congestion on Green Street. One of the biggest events of the season for sports enthusiasts will be the big quarter horse show at Thunderbird ranch in Bull Valley July 31, sponsored by the McHenry Rotary Club. The Chicago and North Western railway company announced recently that the first of 116 air-conditioned, bi-level coaches which will bring about the complete modernization of its suburban train fleet would be delivered in a matter of weeks. Saturday the Shamrocks defeated the Chicago Stars 5-4 behind the seven hit pitching of Ron Mauer. Mauer was also the batting star with three hits. Sharing the spotlight with Mauer was Chuck Pierce who singled home the winning run in the tenth. Roger Tinder hit his second home run of the season in the second. In a second game Sunday, the Shamrocks defeated Richmond 16-5 behind the pitching of Gene Freund. Gene also collected three hits. Roger Tinder also had three hits. Roger Benson, Jack Schaefer, and Denny Freund each had two hits apiece. This victory moved the Shamrocks into fifth place with six wins against six losses. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 25, 1975) Winners of the Plaindealer's centennial beard and mustache contest were Jim Toppter, first; Bob Wiles, first runnerup and Gary Snell, second runnerup.
