Help is on the way. McHenry resident Clifford George knew the area's earwig problem had gotten out of hand when, while talking to a friend, he saw one of the pesky insects sitting on top of a car. "We didn't think we'd see them up here," George said. "We lived in California for 22 years in the (San Francisco) Bay area, and they claimed they (the earwigs) came from Japan." • . • It's also been claimed that ear wigs originated in Europe. Wherev er the earwigs came from, they were giving Bay area residents fits, according to George. "There are a lot of roses and flowers out there. I had 35 or 40 of them (rose bushes) myself. And they would chew them to pieces. "What we did out there was take hoses and run water through them to get them wet inside. Then we'd leave them out overnight with both ends open. Earwigs would crawl in there at night and then we'd shake them out of the hose into a bucket the next morning," George said. Bruce Spangenberg, extension ad visor for the University of Illinois' College of Agriculture in Wood stock, has reported that local gar deners have been finding earwigs in or near hoses. The creepy bugs like cool, dark places which are preferably damp, be they indoors or out. While in California, George exploited that trait for all it was "worth. "The most successful way was taking a piece of plastic or piece of cardboard and soaking it. Then you put it where they were and they'd all be underneath there in the morn ing. They love that moisture and you can trap them that way. It really worked well," said George, who lives on Young Street. Chemical products diazinon and Sevfa, along with familiar bug-rid ding sprays Raid and Ortho. have all been used successfully against the earwigs in the area. The earwig population has in creased in thfe last, three years in Northeastern Illinois, according to Spangenberg, with no apparent endx^ insight. z' "In the fall, they go into trees or the soil until next year. Weil start seeing them in June and they'll stick around until September," he said. But with earwig-killing methods like Clifford George's, at least the insects will know they are not wel come in this neck of the woods.
