Sixteen attend meeting The July meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 was conducted by President Gail Szamlewski, with 16 members present. Auxiliary hospital chairman Ila Hogan stated Gert Gregory, Barb Bryniarski, Mary Fergen, Gail Szamlewski, Regina Behrens and Vi Abbink ac­ companied her to the North Chicago Medical Center car­ nival for patients in the nursing home care unit. The Department of Illinois Ladies Auxiliary Hospital Picnic will be held July 23. Ha, as department chairman at North Chicago Medical Center, will be in charge. Dorothy Bergman, chairman of the local nursing home, ad­ vised that the veterans residing there were surprised and pleased when she visited prior to Fathers Day with gifts for them from the auxiliary. Publicity chairman Gerry Kuck presented the auxiliary 1984-85 publicity book to Junior Past President Eva Snell. Singers perform July 27 Chain O'Lakes Chapter, Sweet Adelines is looking forward to its performance Saturday, July 27, from 1-1:30 p.m. as a part of McHenry's Fiesta Days celebration in Petersen Park. One-fourth of the chorus rtifembers are from the McHenry area and they are excited about singing for their family and friends. In addition to the two shown above, they include Mary Jane Bartlow, Marlene Roberts, Marge Ehrhardt, Mary Jame Boelen and Shirley Van- dewedge. The Sweet Adelines organization provides a blen­ ding of voices singing four-put harmony, barbershop style. All women 16 and over are welcome to join and no formal training is necessary. The Department of Illinois of the Polish Legion of American Veterans USA held its 49th state convention July 19-21, at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare and Liberty Post and Chapter 188 of McHenry returned with many honors. Frank Ficek was elected state commander and Evelyn Ficek was elected state president. The Ficeks were a husband and wife team in 1966-67, leading the McHenry American Legion Post 491. They also served Liberty Post and Chapter 188 for two years. Another honor for McHenry was the recent election of Ernest Stetz Jr. of Liberty Post 188 as zone 3 commander, in command of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, all territory from Canada to the gulf and every state west of the Mississippi. Ladies of Liberty Chapter 188 elected as state officers are Gail Weir, state recording secretary; Susan Wallace, state financial secretary; Sally Bujak, state director; Jackie Anderson, state veterans administration volunteer service officer; and Jackie Anderson and Ursula Stetz, state color bearers. Liberty Post 188 submitted a resolution at this convention urging Governor James Thompson to sign Senate Bill 120, submitted by State Senator T h a d d e u s L e c h o w i c z , establishing an official Casimir Pulaski holiday in Illinois. Under this bill, the first Monday in March would be designated a state public school and bank holiday. Pulaski, known as the "Soldier of Liberty," was asked by Benjamin Franklin to come to the aid of the American colonies to win their freedom. At Brandywine, he saved the life of General George Washington; and at age 32, was killed in the battle of Savannah, Ga., after saving the city from British occupation. The State Department of Illinois, Polish Legion of American Veterans' projects are numerous, besides taking care of hospitalized veterans. "Aid to the Blind" was adopted in 1952 and carried on ever since. This year's essay recipients were Alicia Steel, awarded first place, $1,000 and a braille flag and plaque for Bowen High School; and Julianna Martin, second place, $750, and a braille flag and plaque for Spaulding High School. , The awards were the highlight at the military ball and many tears were shed by the delegates at this convention when these two young ladies addressed the Class of 1930 reunited The class of 1930 from St. Mary's School in McHenry had its fifty-fifth year reunion Sunday, July 21, at a local restaurant, followed by cake and coffee at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Steinbach. Classmates in attendance were Marion Weingart An­ derson, Evelyn Justen Stein­ bach, Catherine Diedrich Thiel, Bernice Freund, Jeanette Bishop, Clara Justen Klap- perick, Mary Sutton Wesson and Clara Freund, all of McHenry; Clarice Blake Montgomery of Waukegan, 01.; Harold Phan- nenstill of Kenosha, Wis. and Eileen Kilday Hogan of Champaign, HI. Newlyweds visit Disneyland while on honeymoon A week-long stay in Califor­ nia, with a visit to Disneyland and other points of interest was in the honeymoon plans of recently married Mr: and Mrs. Michael Scott Schulz. The bride is the former D. Renee Jensen, daughter of Raymond C. and Donna R. Jensen, 913 N. Curran Rd., McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. (Bud and Diane) Schulz, 319 Catalpa, Roselle, 111. are the parents of the bridegroom. The 2 p.m. ceremony was presided over by the Rev. Ralph Smith, pastor of Marengo Methodist Church, June 9, in the First United Methodist Church, McHeriry. A centerpiece of lavender carnations, white daisy mums and greenery decorated the altar and white pew bows marked the aisle. Special music included organ and piano duets by Eloise and John Leighty; Bill Abel singing "Wedding Song" and "You Are My Love" written by'the bride's friend Joy Sanford; and the bride's brother Ricky singing "Pass It On" during the unity candle lighting: The bride wore a white organza gown adorned with silk Venice motifs, a beaded Queen Anne neckline and Chantilly lace on the hemline of the semi- cathedral train. The long, full, organza sleeves ended in lace cuffs adorned with a tiny silk flower. Her Chantilly laee hat, accented by seed pearls and trimmed in white organza, held a short bouffant veil. Her bouquet was of white roses, baby's breath and deep orchid variegated elegance surroun­ ding a white ruffled orchid going away corsage. Robin Jensen of McHenry attended her sister as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were friends of the bride, Teresa Gertsma and Stephanie Hankins, both of McHenry; and a friend of the couple, Ellen Daley of Hoffman Estates. They wore orchid matte taffeta, floor length gowns, styled with a fitted bodice, basque waist, sweetheart neckline and elbow length puffed deeves, finished with self bows on the shoulders. In their hair was a small comb covered with small deep orchid variegated elegance and baby's breath; and they carried bouquets of the same elegance, white daisy mums and baby's breath, laced with orchid rib­ bons. The best man was the groom's brother Steven Schulz of Roselle; and groomsmen were friends of the groom, Bob Matthews and Tad Steinke, both of Roselle, and Jeff Meyers of Wheat cm, ill. The mother of the bride chose an orchid and silver gray print silk, floor length dress with elbow length cape sleeves, blouson bodice, full skirt banded at the waist with an orchid satin ribbon. A periwinkle blue matte georgette, floor length dress with long bishop sleeves, shirred bodice and wrap-around cummerbund was the groom's mother's choice. Their corsages were of white tea roses, car­ nations and baby's breath. A dinner and dancing reception for 150 guests was held MR. AND MRS. MICHAEL SCHULZ a t . t h e M c H e n r y A m e r i c a n Legion hall. The bride's friend Jill Kuhns, stationed in Georgia with the army, was in charge of the guest book. A highlight of the festivities was the bride's rendition of "You've Got A Friend," to her new husband. Special guests were the bride's grandparents, Don and Ann Barger and Lillian Jensen, all of McHenry; the groom's idparents, Harry and Amy ar, and hi* great-uncle Seager, all of Florida. The bride graduated from McHenry West Campus in 1983; received a nursing assistant certificate from McHenry County College in 1983 and was employed at Royal Terrace as a certified nursing assistant. The groom graduated from Roselle High School in 1980; Western Illinois University with a degree in Computer Programming in 1984; and is a technical consultant with Arthur Andersen in Chicago. They are residing in Bloomingdale, HI. All flowers for the wedding and reception were done by the bride's brother Ray, Jr.; and the candle and brass holder for the unity lighting were a gift from Nancy Pfaff, the groom's cousin from Montana. The wedding cake was made by the bride's mother.
