Elm St., McHenry, II. 60050 Fatal accident shatters dream B y Alex Rodriguez laindealer Newsservice Kim Baran Qf Crystal Lake and her fiance Daniel Clark of McHenry -had the date all set. They were planning to get mar ried June 14 next year. In fact, last Wednesday the young couple was supposed to visit the John Evans Inn in Crystal Lake where the re ception was to be held in order to make sure things were on schedule. But what happened the day before changed all that. Baran, 19, Clark, 21, and Gark's best friend, 20-year- old Tim Barry, had just seen a movie at a drive-in theatre in Mc Henry and were walking down Lin coln Road toward Barry's brother's house when a car hit all three, kill ing Clark and seriously injuring Barry. Kim was released from Northern Illinois Medical Center last Wednes day and has almost recovered from her injuries. But, as her mother Margaret says, she might never re cover from the loss of her fiance. Instead of dreaming about her wed ding day, Kim is haunted by night mares reminding her what hap pened in the early hours of July 23, nightmares that have prompted her to seek counseling. "I have my days when I'm angry about it," says Mrs. Baran. "They were planning such a good start." The driver of the car, 24-year-old Jacqueline Staley of McHenry, has been charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to give information. An investigation is still pending on whether Staley will be brought up on additional charges because of Clark's death, according to a spokesman for the McHenry County Sheriff 's Department. Staley's preliminary hearing on the the DUI charge and the other two charges has been set for Aug. 8 at the McHenry County Courthouse. She has been released oik $4,000 bond. Mrs. Baran said that Barry's life might have been saved because of two McHenry County sheriff offi cers who happened to have been driving by the scene of the accident. Barry suffered serious injuries in the accident but is in fair condition at Northwest Memorial Hospital in Chicago. According to hospital spokesman Pat Briggs, Barry is still suffering from a broken neck, a broken leg, and an broken arm. The whole tragedy has been a nightmare for the families of the three youths, and at least for Mrs. Baran, she still feels bitter about it, especially when she thinks about the fact-that Staley was drunk when the accident occurred. Kim Baran and her fiance Daniel Clark. Clark was killed in a car/pedestrian accident in McHenry. The driver of the car has been charged with DUI. Richmond cyclist cited in accident - A Richmond man was cited for failure to report an accident after fleeing the scene of a motorcycle mishap July 27. Randy L. One problem remains for Gloria, the cost of traveling to Reno for this unexpected award which had not been planned for in the family budget. How can cpe be denied this talented lady. A tree fell over on a tran sformer that gave electricity to Myldred Rowe, so she was without power and in darkness Sunday night until 11 a.m. Monday. Myldred is of such strong strength that the lack of light didn't faze her too much. However, when the telphone was inoperable, there was a feeling of aloneness. Her last call out was to me. During the conversation, I heard concerned Vickie DeStananis' voice calling, "Do you have an umbrella?" She had come to- check on Myldred and was thoroughly drenched waiting for Myldred to open the door. Monday morning, Vickie again checked on Myldred's well-being, as did neighbor Fritz Koerner. Then, Com Edison cut down that section of the tree causing the outage, and there was light again. Myldred is truly blessed with people who care about her. But then, she has cared for so many for so long-for which we are all thankful. WELCOME BABY When John Stanley Farenzena grows up, one of his claims to fame will be having been the youngest person to come to the McHenry Nunda Library. John was born June 21, and at the ripe age of 22 days, spent time at the library while brother Frank and mother Mary Ann looked for books to read. John voiced his approval and everyone was delighted to meet him. Father Fred was not present at this auspicious occasion. COMMUNITY LOSS Charles H. Epperson was taken by the rescue squad to NIMC, where he died July 18. is extended to his wife cnildren Rita, Kevin, Patrick and LeRoy, his three grandchildren and other family members. * He had lived in our area more than 31 years; was a WW n veteran and had been active in community affairs. STORM AFTERMATH Remember the rains of July 14? Susan Miller of Lakemoor remembers the result of those torrents only too well. That Monday morning, she opened the door to her resale shop on Riverside drive to be greeted by a stream of water. It seems the roof had collapsed due to the weight of the rain, and there was water everywhere, plus plaster and ceiling debris. Susan finally has all the clothes washed and dry cleaned, and the store all redone, except for replacing the ceiling. She is waiting for another heavy rain to make sure the new roof is water tight before covering the inside. Until then, the air con ditioner is working overtime to keep the whole area cool. GOD BLESS a.m. July 27. Both drivers involved in a two-car collision last Sunday were ticketed by McHenry Police. Daniel L.
