Green St., McHenry, is one of 5,000 congregations that make up The American Lutheran Church, with /home offices in Min- 9eaf)olis, Minn. Recently, this local congregation was chosen as one of a group of 150 congregations within the American Lutheran Church to help develop a new Evangelism program for the church at large. The eight- month project will be coor dinated on the local level by Erv Staveteig, who is serving as parish coordinator for the parish. The national offices of the church are endeavoring to research with the 150 congregations chosen for this special assignment, what ingredients make up a suc cessful church program and E v a n g e l i s m p r o g r a m . Evangelism and Outreach has been held up as the number one priority of the American Lutheran Church during the 1980's. Eighty-four new parish starts were implemented m the United S States in 1984. The special v research period prior to * developing the new Evangelism | Program for the church will help identify what is successful ' in a church program in terms of small and large group growth settings, such as parish 4 education, retreats, enrichment - courses, etc. •i* r The research period will pinpoint how local congregations can practice outreach effectively and how to ~ involve new members in the life and programs of the local * parish. The attitude toward parish education in the parish 'life will also be studied and -evaluated. ! The goal of the study in .preparation for the new progream will be to discover "what is effective and what is not effective in a church program. 1 fi The parish program outline, currently implemented at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, has been used as a model for many new parish settings across the United States. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church has been the fastest growing congregation in the American Lutheran Church in the past 22 years. Hie congregation currently numbers over 2,000 baptized members in its 20-year history. "We have developed and have had high expectations for our lay leaders of the years," stated Pastor Roger Schneider. The attitude of concern and exhibited in the local has been studied by the national offices of the church. It is hoped that through careful planning, the new Evangelism program being developed by the national offices of the church, will provide special insights for future successful programs both in rural and city parishes. As a part of the local Evangelism program, Shepherd of the Hills receives new members every eight weeks. Last Sunday, new members received into the fellowship of the church during one of the Sunday morning worship ser- - vices included Philip, Joan, William and Kathleen Aufman; David, Sandra and Scott Kufahl; Steve, Tami and Jacob Chambers; Robert, Beverly, Mark and Matthew Fluger.
