Wheels Guanci completely original designs, however, and many of the other parts were specially modified to fit the design. The Corvette engine was chosen for perfor mance reasons, Guanci said. For several years the Guanci team couldn't find an engine power-, ful enough to match the fast look of the car, which slowed the cars deyelopment. He plans to continue making the car with the current year's Corvette engine. According to Guanci, the Corvette engine should propel the SJJ-l to a top speed of approx imately 150 mph or higher, and the car will do 0 to 60 mph in six seconds. ThoseJigures are only estimates, though, Guanci pointed out. Plans call for the production model's body to be made from Kevlar, a special material used in bulletproof vests and other applications where high strength and light weight are need ed, Guanci said. He estimated that using the new material should reduce the total weight of the car by another several hundred pounds, which will make the car even faster. The lighter body should also improve the car's gas iqjleage, Guanci said. The present car has been getting about 20 miles per gallon highway, but with the new body that should increase to around 23, he hopes. The car sits on a wheelbase of 102 inches, has a ground hugging clearance of only 5.5 inches and a height of 47 inches. Despite being low slung, the car has 44 inches of legroom and 36 Inches of headroom, so it can accommodate even six-foot-plus drivers. The one thing about the car that may surprise many sports car enthusiasts is that the SJJ-l production is presently planned to include only models with automatic transmissions. "If we can find a manual transmission that can take the power then we'll offer it," Guanci lained. "We can't find a transmission that fit with the trans-mounted engine and not be GuancTsaid that whUe he has gotten a lot of favorable reaction from people who "really know cars" as he put it, most also tell him that his car reminds them of another car. "Most people say it looks like a Porsche 028," he said. "We've had the basic design since 1077, thfMiffti Mike Williams was actually the man responsi- -- * (Continued from Page 1C) We for the finished design. Williams is an indus trial designer who has worked for a variety of commercial clients, both in and out of the automotive industry. Bob McKee was the man primarily responsible for designing the car frame and chassis. McKee has been designing for the racing industry for many years and is best known for his Schkee Can-Am cars, which Williams also worked on. Guanci said they have actually built four different cars over the years. Very few changes have been made in the basic design, though, other than switching to the Corvette engine. One of the prototypes was actually sold to a man in Michigan in 1070 and is still being driven today. Another was torn apart for closer examination. Guanci still has two versions, the one he plans to show, and the first version made with the Cor vette engine. Guanci plans to take the car to California first to try and line up dealers to carry it. He said he plans to start with California, because that is where he believes is the biggest market for luxury sports cars, due to the year 'round nice weather and the life style. From there he plans to go to Arizona and Texas and eventually work around the country. Guanci thinks the SJJ-l will appeal to the driver'that is wealthy and not afraid to show it-- someone who doesn't mind attracting attention and wants something different. He feels the fact that the car will only bfe in limited production and can be custom made to each owner's wish es, will also be strong selling points. Guanci conservatively estimates the market for this level car at between 3,000 and 4,000 cars a year ̂While final cost of his car will depend on any modifications the purchaser may want, Guanci anticipates pricing his car in the $60,000 range, once it is in ftfll production. Over the eight ana a half years the car has been in development, Guanci estimates that he has spent less than,$1 million, but definitely more than 1500,000. If he can line up enough dealers willing to carry the car during his fall trip, he hopes to be able to get enough financial backing to build a factory and gear up for production In 1066. For now his goal is to be turning cars at a rate of 250 per year, one a work day, each made by hand.
