', TMeUfenes Hope took some time off to reminisce about golf By Constancy Pace As a golfer, Bob Hope is strictly an amateur, but his celebrity status has allowed him special entree into the world of professional golf. Hope has played golf for almost 60 years, and his reminiscences of the sport are detailed in his inimitable comic style in the new book "Confessions of a Hooker: My Lifelong Love Affair with Golf," which has been on the New York Times best-seller list for many weeks. "I've written nine of them," Hope recalls. "Doubleday's been after me for years to do this one, but it was kind of hard to catch up with me, with my schedule. (The 82- year-old Hope travels around the world constantly and does at least four NBC variety specials a year.) But Dwayne Netland, my collaborator (and also senior editor of Golf Digest) trailed me around for a year, and we finally got down to it." As Netland says in his own brief introduction to the book, Hope did much more than dictate his ideas. He actually co-wrote and revised the book. (Netland also assures us that megamillionaire Hope is donating all the proceeds to the USO.) The book reads as if Hope himself is personally delivering a comic routine: 1) features his trademark short snappy sentences, punctured with gag lines. It's these gag lines that make the book worthwhile, especially for strangers to the sport. Hope recalls many famous players, both pro and non-pro. Of Jackie Gleason he quips. "He has the only golf cart equipped with a bartender." Of Arnold Palmer: "He's the biggest crowd pleaser since the invention of portable sanitary facilities. He's won as much money playing golf as I've spent in lessons." Of Sammy Davis Jr.: "After every shot he plays, the caddy stuffs (Sammy) back into the bag." Hope is also merciless to his presidential pal, Gerald Ford, who also wrote an introduction to the book: "You all know Jerry Ford -- the most dangerous driver since 'Ben Hur.' He drives the only golf cart with a red cross on top." Hope often gets serious. He's proud that the proceeds from his annual Bob Hope Desert Classic have gone to help build the Eisenhower Medical Center. He recalls sadly that his best friend Bing Crosby died on a golf course after completing a full round of 18 holes and recollects hearing later that an English doctor had forbidden Crosby to play more than 9 holes because of a weak heart. Throughout the book, Hope's all-encompassing passion for the sport comes through. "After all, golf is my real profession," he writes "Entertainment is just a sideline. I tell jokes to pay my greens fees." (Pi 1985 Computog
