By Steve Green United Press International BOISE, • Idaho -- The National Governors' Association is to vote Tuesday on a resolution urging the federal government to cut the num ber of farm liquidations by increas ing its intervention in agriculture credirmarkets. The proposal -- offered by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad -- also calls on Congress to reduce the federal defi cit, which Branstad argues has forced interest rates up and reduced U.S. farm income. The resolution was adopted by the Governors' Association's Agricul ture Committee Sunday and will be considered by the full body Tuesday. Because the resolution was only introduced Sunday, governors must first vote on whether to consider the measure. Approval to consider the resolution and adoption of the docu ment itself both require the approv al of 75 percent of the governors' voting. Branstad's resolution says "sig nificant numbers of farmers and ranchers" are facing the most seri ous crisis in 40 years. "It is imperative that the private sector and the public sector, at both the federal and state level, cooper ate to develop and implement mea sures which will provide both short- term relief and long-term promise to persons engaged in production agriculture and related industries," the resolution says. The document says: --The federal government should review liquidation plans of the farm credit system and if necessary in tervene to prevent liquidations "which would destabilize the farm credit situation." N BC slows show pace By Art Chapman Fort Worth Star-Telegram FORT WORTH, Tex. - While ev eryone else in television news seems to be rushing toward high tech gadgetry and fast-paced story presentation, NBC has apparently decided to slow the pace and return to a more relaxed show-and-tell approach. Their newest entry into prime time news magazine shows is called "American Almanac", and the net work is obviously hoping to revive some of that old apple pie spirit with this red, white and blue program. The host is Roger Mudd, a distin guished newsman with a pleasant smile and a college professor's de meanor. He says in his opening that he wants us to think of his show as an almanac, something we would hang on a nail by the door if we could. And certainly we would. In the opening we see the American flag, a soaring eagle, quiet windmills, cow boys and cops. It is a panorama of our country and the sort of thing Currier and Ives would have liked to print in blue on our dinnerware. But an almanac is a reference book, looked at only on those special occassions when we need informa tion -- specific information. It's not a novel, it's not designed for hours of entertainment like a prime time television program is supposed to be. Flexible life insurance with high cash value.
