Page 12 McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Wednesday, August 7,1985 Sports Minor leaguers anxious of strike By Michael Spataro United Press International New England's seven minor league baseball teams said Tuesday they would relish the spotlight if major league players decide to strike. Minor league teams, usually the obscure offspring of baseball, may become the focal point of the sport and enjoying national exposure for a time. Ip New England, baseball fans who don't want to boycott the sport can watch any of seven teams, in cluding the Pawtucket (R.I.) Red Sox and Maine Guides of the Inter national League, a AAA circuit one step below the major leagues. , Pawtucket's parent club is the Boston Red Sox. The Guides, locat ed in the coastal town of Old Or chard Beach, are a Cleveland Indi ans affiliate "We won't be doing anything spe cial to capitalize on the situation," said Michael Tamburro, general manager of the Pawtucket club, which is currently in the midst of an ll-game losing streak. "A strike isn't good for any level of baseball." Heading into Tuesday's action, the PawSox were 37-74 and 27^ games out of first place, but the Guides were 61-50 and just three games off the pace. Some of the other minor league clubs said they would take an ag gressive marketing approach to capitalize on the situation. The Vermont Reds, Cinncinati's entry in the AA Eastern League, are currently in fourth place with a 58-55 mark, 11 games out of first place. Vermont General Manager Meg Werner sakl area baseball fans who usually travel to Olympic Stadium to watch the Montreal Expos will be more than welcome at Centennial Field in Burlington. "We're talking of the idea of somehow tying into (an advertising theme of), 'If you can't go to the Big 0 (Olympic Stadium), come to Cen tennial Field,'" Werner said. "We're hoping it will boost atten dance and we'll get people out to the ballpark who might otherwise go to Montreal, Boston and New York." Fans in Connecticut, Massachu setts and New Hampshire can also enjoy Eastern League baseball. The New Britain Red Sox and Waterbury Indians in Connecticut are playing above .500 ball and team officials expect the strike to boost their season attendance totals. "Thousands of people crawling over the stadium screaming for baseball?," joked Bill Terlecky, general manager of the Indians. "The media attention has been real ly good. It will help us get the word out."
