I Hold your horses, there, Don, unless you have an intimate en­ gineering knowledge of modem engines, you'd better not fool with the smog controls, for the machine's sake, and also for your own legal well-being. A few years back, smog controls did cripple an engine's perfor­ mance. The new, electronically- controlled units do less to cramp an engine's style. They're also designed into its heart and your car could have a coronary if you tamper with them. Souping up the new motors can also run you afoul of federal, state and local laws. Certain modifications such as carbure­ tors, ignition timing, or exhaust changes may not be acceptable for street or highway use under current emission laws. Any special parts that are used for competitive events can only be used in sanctioned off-highway events. These emission rules may be hard to swallow, Don, but they let us all breathe a little easier. But, a lot of what you see does do some good in reducing the turbulence as air flows over the car. While there are many night driving lights on the market, it's best to look for lights with a deep reflective dish because the deeper the dish, the farther the light will travel.
