(ABC) 8PORT8BEAT (ABC) PGA CHAMPIONSHIP BROADWAY JOE - Joe Namath. "Broadway Joe" to millions of New York Jets fa/is, was ensh rined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and started a new job. all on the same day. Following yesterday's induction into the Hall, Namath joined fellow Hall of Famer Frank Gifford in the ABC broadcasting booth and described the New York Giants-Houston Oilers annual Hall of Fame game No one can question Namath's credentials to the Hall of Fame He gave credibil"" to the old Ameri can Football League with a more -han-major-league salary, then led his Jets to their historic victory in- Super Bowl III for the American Conference's first championship. Covering the NFL games on Monday Night Foot ball could be a different can of worms, but ABC is sure it has the right man to replace Dandy Don Meredith. Before yesterday's game. Namath had no actual experience behind the mike, but he Has developed some stage presence over the years and has appeared as an actor in many theatrical produc tions throughout the country. The former New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams quarterback made his stage debut in 1979 and has starred in motion pictures, television variety shows and a situation comedy, "The Waverly Wonders." Then there are his Brut commercials and his famous pantyhose job. And Namath has already done one thing in broadcasting that equals his football-playing days. He came into the AFL in 1965 as the highest paid pro football player -- at $400.,000 a season -- and he starts behind the mike as the highest paid first- year announcer in the game (the actual figure hasn't been announced). Namath says he'll earn his money. "I'll certainly be prepared." he said when he signed on. "As a quarterback, I found out early how important being prepared is -- doing your homework. I want to feel comfortable." The hard-throwing quarterback's "Broadway Joe" moniker doesn't come from his association with the theater, but from the fact that all the pass es he *hrew were not in Shea Stadium. It's the com pletions that got'him his name. But all that is history anH the 42-year-old former passer is now a happily married man. ©tMSCompulog SUNDAY, AUG. 25 60 Njlrt Universe @) B Poguene Cid lUld UVM I Oral lilim> to thwart a bank robbery.
