After playing in more games at shortstop than anyone in major league history, Bowa was released by the Cubs Monday night to make way for Shawon Dunston from the minors. "I think the timing could have been better," Bowa said from Wrig- ley Field. "If I hadn't been hitting so well in the last month, I think I could have understood it. I know I played my butt off and that's some thing I can be proud of." Bowa, 39, previously indicated this might be his last year. He ex pected the Cubs to let him go Sept. 1 when the club was to bring up Dun ston along with its other rookies. But the Cubs wanted a longer look at Dunston, who won the starting shortstop job at the start of the season, and Bowa became expendable. "No, I'm not bitter," said Bowa, his voice quivering. "They want to take a look at the kid. I wish him luck. I wish the Cubs well. I really do." Bowa was acquired by the Cubs from Philadelphia in January 1982 along with Ryne Sandberg for Ivan DeJesus. He was batting .244 with no homers and 13 RBI at the time of his release. Whether he catches on with another team this year is ques tionable. He said he does not want to travel from club to club after playing nearly 20 years with just two organizations -- the Cubs and the Phillies. "Besides, most of the contending clubs have good shortstops al ready," he said. "I don't know yet what I'm going to do. I don't know if I will play any more." Bowa has played in a record 2,212 games with 2,189 hits. He will dis cuss with the Cubs a possible job in the organization as coach, manager or instructor. His agent already has been contacted by the Phillies. Bowa said his biggest thrill was winning the World Series with the Phillies in 1980. "That's what it's all about," he said. "Last year, winning the divi sion title, was close. This was a close team." While Bowa cleaned out his lock-' er, Dunston was shaking hands with his teammates after a nearly three- month stay in Iowa. "The hardest thing that can hap pen to you is to be sent down to the minor leagues," said Dunston, bat ting .269 with 13 errors in 72 games with the Cubs' top minor league team. "My family just told me to play hard and not let the Cubs think that I was mad at them or anything." Dunston hit .194 with nine errors in 23 games with the Cubs. He likely will start the rest of the season. "I know it will be less pressure," Chicago manager Jim Frey said. "At the beginning of the season, he came to the ballpark and didn't know whether if he would make a mistake whether Bowa would come in. We're going to get a look at him in the next 50 games and get an idea of whether the kid can really play." , /s :f{ , ! 2 MEN'S IS" REC LEAGUE Tuesday night, Knox Park W L Sentry Insurance-Old Bridge 12 1 His-Her Hair Hut 11 2 Market Place Coin Wash 7 6 B)mbo's-Christopher's 7 6 Busy Bee-RSAC 6 7 West End Pub 5. 8 Lakes Cablevision 3 10 Back Door Tavern l 12 Raaulta: Sentry-Old Bridge 8.
