A thought for the day: Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) said, "Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them, the rest of us could not succeed." \ Gulf storm heads toward coast By United Press International MIAMI -- Tropical storm Danny whirled through the Gulf toward the Texas-Louisiana coast Wednesday with 55 mph winds that could reach hurricane force and some resort is land residents and tourists began fleeing inland. A hurricane watch and gale warn ings were issued for a 500-mile stretch from Port Aransas, Texas, to the Mississippi River. The center of the storm could make landfall as soon as noon Thursday, said National Hurricane Center forecaster Jim Gross. "Even though there has been no significant change in strength, we would not be surprised if Danny becomes a hurricane before reach ing the coast Thursday," said Neil Frank, director of the hurricane center in Miami. "All interests in the warning area should be ready for quick action if this occurs," he said. At 3 p.m. EDT, the center of Dan ny was located near latitude 25.6 north, longitude 91.3 west, or about 330 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas. It was headed northwest in the general direction of Galveston at 10-15 mph. Frank said the highest winds were estimated at nearly 55 mph with gales extending 100 miles to the north and east of the center. A storm must pack sustained winds of at least 74 mph to be classified as a hurricane. Meanwhile, Hurricane Claudette moved further into the open Atlan tic Wednesday, about 1,000 miles east northeast of Bermuda, where it was expected to begin weakening. Officials and residents along the watch area began making prepara tions Wednesday when it appeared the storm might hit their area. Evacuations were still voluntary, but residents and tourists vacation ing at Grand Isle on the southeast ern tip of Louisiana jammed the one highway leading back to the mainland. "I think it's because they still can remember Hurricane Betsy (1965). A lot of people didn't leave then, and they saw cars tumbling down the highway and houses floating McHENRY Plaindealer •AMACO •WHITE HEN PANTRY •BELL LIQUORS •BOLGERS DRUGSTORE •JEWEL/OSCO •KAREN &GINNY'S •LIQUOR MART •NORTHERN IL MEDICAL CNTR •FOOD MART •NORTHWEST TRAIN DEPOT •ISLAND FOODS •CONVENIENT FOOD •COUNTRY * CUPBOARD •SULLIVAN FOODS •UNION 76 •COLE PHARMACY •COAST TO COAST •SUNNYSIDE GAS & QUICK MART , Available At The Following Locations: •J&LGAS •ACE HARDWARE •LAKEVIEW FOODS •SUNNYSIDE FOODS •LITTLE STORE •SUNRISE GROCERY •DEBBIE'S GENERAL STORE •VILLAGE MARKET •McHENRY DRUG •J &R FOOD MART OH WEIGHT LOSS along," said Grande Isle Mayor Tommy Marullo. "We've got a lot of traffic with people filling their cars up, just in case," said Kyle Howard on the Civil Defense staff at coastal Cam eron, La. At New Iberia, the mid-point of the Louisiana coast, residents were encouraged to go to churches to spend the night. Others were filling motels in Lafayette to the north. Store owners reported residents were cleaning off shelves of emer gency goods such as batteries, canned goods, flashlights and mate rials to cover windows.
