I currently owe 92,800 on my 198S automobile, and I am very unhappy with.it. , The heater core needs to be repaired, and the hatchback does not close properly. My car currently has 35,000 miles on it. I have looked at a 1982 import, which I think would serve me better. Unfortunately, the dealer is willing to give me only*$2,S00 for my current car, even though I still owe $2,800. Since the cost of the replacement car is $5,400, I will have to finance $5,700; Two of my friends have told me I'm making a mistake, but I can't see why. I don't like the car I have now, so why not trade up? The dealer is enthusiastic about the plan, and I believe he is right. But before I take the plunge, I thought I'd you a note. Can you see any Mem with it? - R.N., FLOR- 5, SC. DEAR R.N. -- I can see lots of problems. You are thinking of spending 50 percent of one year's take-home pay on a 3-year-old automobile. In my opinion, that's akin to insanity. Further, you will be taking less for your trade-in than you owe on it. If that's not financial suicide, it comes awfully close. You indicated that your current automobile has 35,000 miles on it. That means it's hardly broken in. You say that the heater core needs repair work. That's a minor proposition -- hardly a reason to trade in an auto mobile. And I'm sure the hatchback can be fixed as well. You may have become disheart ened and frustrated because of a number of minor problems with this car. But to go out and buy another automobile that's a year older, pay $5,400 for it (over half a year's take- home pay), and lose the car you have now, makes no sense whatsoever. Do yourself a favor. Continue with the car you have now and have the heater core and the hatchback repaired. Then, when -- and only • when -- the car is completely paid off, consider buying another automo bile. On your salary, the maximum you should spend on a new cfer would be ! about $6,000. And I certainly wouldn't spend $5,000 on a used automobile, learning the salary you have described. DEAR BRUCE -- My husband and I are taking a vacation in Europe this summer and would like to rent an automobile. Do you recommend that we rent a car ahead of time in the United States or rent the car in Europe when we get there? -- L.P., Milwaukee, Wis. DEAR L.P. -- If convenience is your primary concern, renting the car in this country is the way to travel. You can make all the arrangements in advance, and the car will be wait ing upon your arrival at a reasonably convenient pickup point. But if you're traveling on a limited budget, you'll probably do better rent ing the car yourself in Europe. That's because there are many small Euro pean car-rental companies that are not represented in this country, and you will probably be able to find a better deal there than you will find in this country. There's one other factor that you may want to consider: If you are trav eling during the high season, you could have trouble finding a car once you get there. But I would still opt for on-site renting. When I have traveled abroad, I have always managed to find a car on site, and I usually have saved a considerable amount of money by doing so. Interestingly, the opposite is often true in this country. If you make a reservation in advance, particularly during the slack periods (weekends and so forth), you will sometimes get a much better deal than you could get on-site. Holidays Holidays aren't all Christmas and New.Years. There's also Bird Day, which is generally celebrated with Arbor Day; Sadie Hawkins Day is Nov. 16 this year; World Poetry Day is Oct. 15; Loyalty Day is on May 1; General Pulaski Memorial wy is on Oct. 11, and American Family Day falls on Aug. 4. You and Your Car Tips from the ^^^Mobi^utoTechGroup For most cars for most driving conditions, you should use engine oil rated 5W-30 for viscosity, to flow easily in cold weather but retain body in the heat. So say newest rec ommendations by U.S. carmakers. Ford's 1985' 2 Escort received its first styl ing and powertrain update since its intro duction five years ago. The new Escorts have a more aerodynamic appearance and a little more power. There are many good 5W-30 oils. But, with the trend to smaller en gines running hotter to turn out more power, there could be increas ing attention to synthetics. For example, turbocharger impellers can run 120,000 rpm, and temper atures exceed 500 degrees F. Conventional lubricants are re fined from crude oil into several thousand kinds of hydrocarbons working together more or less. In contrast, a good synthetic like Mobil 1 is made from a few chemi cal "building blocks" selected for special capabilities, like stability over a wide temperature range, and ability to lubricate with less con tamination, wear and friction, in creasing power. Synthetic Mobil 1 is now availa ble in two viscosities. There's a 15W-50--for motorists wanting a thicker oil for high-performance care. A1 Unser, Jr. used it in winning New York's 1985 Indy Car Grand Prix. Then there's a 5W-30. Care using it won more than half the first places through most of 1985 in endurance races for showroom stock-cars. That's the kind you see on the road. In Sports Car Club of America's U.S. Endurance Cup series, the cars go pretty much all out for 6, 12 or 24 hours. WE COVER THE AUTOMOTIVE MARKET! NEW OR USED BUYING OR SEUIN6?
