He currently is appearing as a VJ on'VH-1, the adult al ternative to MTV, but Shannon admits that radio is his real sweetheart. Shannon's radio station is New York City's WHT2, otherwise known as Z-100, where he is the undisputed leader of the "Morning Zoo." As the station's pro gram director. Shannon took Z-100 from a jazz for mat to the country's most listened to -- and imitated -- Top 40 station in just 74 days. Clever promotion is still the key, and Shannon noned his promotional skills in Mobile, Ala.; Nash ville. Tenn.; Tampa. Fla., and Atlanta, where he per formed similar feats, be fore taking a bite out of the Big Apple two summers ago. Unlike many other radio personalities, Shannon claims that he has never felt the need to be seen. So why did he agree to join VH-1, where he has no control over the program ming anci is basically a talking head? The answer doesn't come easily. Shannon ad mits, but basically, he can't beat the exposure (VH-I has 6 million view ers). And his VH-1 job, which takes only five hours out of his week because tne videos are added in later, fits nicely into his busy schedule. Thus far. Shannon's be havior on VH-1 has borne little resemblance to his r-- Scott Shannon sarcastic, often caustic ra dio antics, but there's a reason for this: "I decided to be smooth and good." he savs. "because the ma jority of VH-1 viewers are not in New York. I want the people to get to know me before l come on strong." HARD WORK - Kevin Dobson knew what hard work was long before he started putting in 12-hour days on the set of "Knots Landing." Dobson has totted as a railroad engi neer on both coasts and has also driven a cab in New York City. It was after a particularly trying night irs that cab -- one in which he made only $22 -- that Dobson decided acting must be closer to his calling. With the $22 in his pock et on that night in May 1971. Dobson hopped on a plane and took off for Los Angeies. Five months later, he landed the first of his many roles: a guest stint as a bad guy on "Mod Squad." But actress Shawn Weatherly. who was Miss Universe 1980, graduated to a more interesting post-reign fob. She and undersea producer-director-cinematographer Al Gtddtngs spent a full year traveling more than 300.00C miles and exploring the mysteries of the world's six oceans. Highlights of this £ umey will be shown on ' oceanQuest." a five-part summer series The first epi sode of "oceanQuest " will be broadcast on N6C on Sun day. Aug 16. Says Miss Weatherly: "I used to think my only value was in my looks The protect gave me self-confidence and a new perspective For many actresses, the primary level ol communication is superficial Are you pretty enough or thin enough for the part? It gets pretty boring rolling up your hair and putting on makeup day after day. I v.sc ready fcr a change -.vhen oceanQuest' came along, and the risk excited me " A risk it certainly was. In Antarctica, she had to swim uncer a sheet ot tee 9 feet thick, entering and exiting through a single hole <0 inches wide Mear Australia, she ventured into the water tn a prolet*-- »e sharkjaae and met the feared Great White variStjjrface to lace. Off Cuba, she and Giddings explored the Blue Hole, an area that Cuban locals say is mysterious and dangerous and had never been explored before Her greatest fears before the trip were snakes, the dark and the ocean. Now. she savs. "I came out of the project loving these things and firidn g them beautiful." Miss Weatherly. 25. who grew up in Sumter. Miss Weatherly had to take i physical fitness test and a swimming test in Gidding Los Angeles pool She had no problem passing since she has consioerable enourancelrom being a long-distance runner. She had. however, only gone scuba diving once before. MibS We.itherly is extremely proud ot her accomplish ments during her year at sea Whether or not ocean- Quest is a vehicle tor my acting career isn't my main concern It's advanced me as a person, and the things I learned about myself will help me in the icnq run III be bragging about this experience until I'm And trunk- of what,t.have to show my grandchildren "
