August 16,19W> World Killer believed near as Pope blesses nun Polk International KINSHASA, Zaire -- Pope John Paul II Thursday beautified an Afri can nun who died resisting rape and forgave "with all my heart" the man who hacked her to death. The killer was believed to be in the crowd that heard the message. The pope proclaimed Sister Ma r ie-Clementine Anuari te a "blessed" of the church, a status that usually leads to sainthood. Her parents and three sisters were pre sent to hear the proclamation. Sister Anuarite and 33 other nuns were captured by Simba rebels dur ing the 1964 civil war in southern Katanga province. Scores of whites and thousands of blacks were s, slaughtered in the fighting. ^ The 23-year-old nun was beaten s and bayonetted to death Dec. 1,1964 : by Pierre Openge Olombe, a rebel - officer. Olombe, who was sentenced C to death for the crime but later ;• pardoned by President Mobutu - Sese-Seko, has said he killed Sister ' Anuarite after she refused to be- * come the mistress of a rebel leader. ! The pope said her last words to the killer were those of Christ: "I .'forgive you because you know not what you do." • He added, "I myself, in the name lof the whole church, forgive with all ;my heart." * There was a moment's silence, ^then strong applause from the •crowd of 60,000 people in the ^congregation. • Vatican spokesman Joaquin Na varro Vails said Olombe "very probably" was in the congregation, frit there was no immediate confir mation of his presence. The pope declined an indirect re quest from Olombe for a face-to- face meeting. Olombe, who report edly has converted to Christianity, told Zairean reporters that he per sonally wanted to seek the pontiff's forgiveness. Vatican officials said the pope ducked a direct meet ing with Olombe on protocol grounds. The pope, making his second visit to Africa's largest Christian nation where more than 43 percent of the 30.5 million people are Catholics, celebrated mass on the steps of the marble and glass Palace of the Peo ple, headquarters of Zaire's only legal political party. When John Paul celebrated mass at the same site five years ago, nine people died in a stampede. Authori ties said they limited the number of people at the mass this year to prevent a similar tragedy. Mobutu and his wife attended the mass but the president left before communion. Mobutu has clashed with church officials over several issues, including his campaign to end the use of Christian names. At a meeting later with Mobutu and other government officials, the pope appeared to criticize corrup tion and bans on opposition parties in Zaire. John Paul said wise government could exist only where "rigorous honesty prevails and where con flicts are settled with fairness," and said a society's economy should benefit all the people fairly. Mobutu, who received 99.6 per cent of the vote in a 1984 referen dum, has amassed a private fortune estimated by Western diplomats at several billion dollars. t OF ALL YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS, WHICH DO YOU CHERISH MOST? The Iranian goveramen had no £ immediate comment on the s claim by the official Iraqi News ^Agency and independent confir- * mation was not available. C Kharg Island, off the coast of J Iran in the Persian Gulf, is one of •the biggest oil installations in the '.world. "Iraqi fighter Jets pounded the ^Iranian Kharg Island at 11:15 *a.m. (3:15 a.m. EDT), turning Uhe island into ashes," INA said In a dispatch monitored in 'Beirut. Rebels claim downed helicopters Farah International SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - Leftist guerrillas claimed Thursday they shot down two U.S.-supplied military helicopters during heavy fighting against government troops earlier this week. In a broadcast over their clandes tine Radio Venceremos, the rebels claimed to have downed one heli copter near the town of Osicala in Morazan province, 90 miles east of the capital, and the other near Chi- chontepec volcano, 25 miles south east of San Salvador in San Vicente province. The Radio Venceremos broadcast claimed the UH-1H "Huey" helicop ters were shot down Tuesday, and that the pilot of the plane downed in Morazan was injured. Military officers in Morazan and San Vincente provinces said the ra dio reports were "lies of the. terror ists," and that no helicopters had been shot down this week. But the army press office con firmed one helicopter was downed in Morazan province, and that the pilot was wounded. Unofficial sources say the United States has supplied El Salvador with 49 combat helicopters, which have played a key role in recent army successes against the guerrillas. The military has launched a ma jor counterinsurgency campaign in six of El Salvador's 14 provinces during the past week in an effort to dislodge the rebels from their tradi tional strongholds. Heavy fighting has been reported ^by civilian sources in central Chala- tenango province, as well as north eastern Morazan province and near the Guazapa Volcano, 12 miles north of San Salvador. Neither the rebels nor the army have been issuing casualty reports, although both sides have reported fierce fighting. Guerrillas ̂ ave been fitting the U.S.-backed government in El Sal vador for six years. More than 55,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the battles, or by right-wing death squads. Think most furniture stores are all alike? Man avoids fee atop tree JAKARTA, Indonesia (UPI) -- A villager in southern Sumatra has spent the past 19 months atop a coconut tree to escape his creditors, ignoring his wife's pleas and threats of violence, a report said Thursday. The newspaper Sinar Harapan said the villager, Tohiran, 42, climbed the 65 ft. tree in January 1984 and has defied the orders of local officials and the impassioned pleas of his distraught wife to end his self-exile. "I wont come down until I get divine inspiration," Tohiran was quoted as saying. The paper said Tohiran shinnied up the tree to avoid paying a debt to a credit company and has become a local celebrity, attracting admirers from all over southern Sumatra. He reportedly spends his time singing Javanese songs and giving lottery predictions to fans, who toss him food and drinks in return. 3814 W. MAIN ST. McHENRY 385-0093 LOBSTER FEST AT ST. SPORTS FANS I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Strange, but true: ...Bill Virdon managed the New York Yankees for 2 years • in 1974 and 1975 - yet NEVER went to Yankee Stadium while he was their ma- nager!... Here's how that happened... During the 2 years Virden was manager, Yankee Stadium wa3 being remodeled and the Yanks played in the Mets' Shea Stadium instead...By the time the Yanks returned to Yankee Stadium in 1976, Virdon was no longer their manager • so Yankee manager Bill Virdon never ma naged the Yankees in Yankee Stadium! *** Here's an oddity about the all-time great big league baseball pitcher Warren Spahn...Spahn pitched for the Braves for exactly 21 seasons...His uniform number throughout his career was, by coinci dence, 21...He won 21 games • no more, no less • in EVERY one of these seasons: 1947, 1949, 1950, 1954, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1961...And to top off the oddity of 21 in Spahn's life, he was born in 1921. What's the closest any big league base ball player has come to hitting .400 for a full season since it was last done by Ted Williams in 1941?...The man who's come closest is George Brett who hit .390 in 1980. I bet you didn't know...that now is the best time for home improvements. And now's the best time to see Keith Leather, Linda Wigman or myself for an improve ment loan from McHenry State Bank.
