P*B8 4 McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Friday. August 23, IMS World let bursts into flames on takeoff By Jobo Jones United Press International MANCHESTER, England - A British Alrtours jetliner carrying 137 people to the Greek resort Island of Corfu burst Into a "ball of fire" Thursday when one of Its engines exploded on takeoff, killing 54 peo ple and Injuring dozens of others. Police said most of the victims, which included two airline atten dants, died strapped in their seats in the back of the burning Boeing 737. The 83 survivors were sitting in the front of the plane and were able to exit by sliding down emergency chutes. It was the third major airline di saster in 19 days and the fourth this summer. Aviation officials said 1965 has already registered the highest number of fatalities in airline history. Manchester Airport Chief Execu tive Gil Thompson said Flight KT 328 was barreling down the runway at Manchester International Airport at 110 mph when its port-wing en gine exploded. "Immediately, the aircraft be came saturated in fuel and within seconds it had become an inferno," Thompson said. "We have no idea what caused It. It exploded for some mysterious reason." Witnesses said the pilot screeched to a halt, aborting takeoff, and in a matter of seconds the plane erupted into flames, virtually snapping the tail from the rest of the craft. The plane was destroyed by the fire. Police and fire officials said 54 people were killed and 83 others were taken to nearby hospitals, some in serious condition. Witnesses said panic-stricken sur vivors were engulfed in smoke and fire as they scrambled to reach the emergency exits. "Anyone left in the plane after one minute didn't stand a chance," survivor Keith Middleton said. Prime Minister Margaret Thatch er, ending her summer vacation in Austria, changed plans to fly into London and instead flew to Man- Rescue workers and firemen sift through wreck age of Boeing 737 British Airways charter flight which erupted into flames during an aborted takeoff Thursday. Hie 737 was loaded with vacationers and enroute to the Mediterranean. Police said at least 65 people may have died. The aircraft carried 131 passengers and a crew of six. Airport officials said fire broke out in the port wing engine of the jet. Chester to visit the scene of the disaster. "It was everyone for themselves trying to get off that plane," one survivor said. "The fumes and flames were billowing in. I couldn't breathe." "Everyone was pushing from be hind. People were falling all over each other, trampling each other," he said. "There were about 30 people In front of me and as I went down the chute, I felt this blast of searing heat," said another survivor, Mike Mather, 21. "We are just lucky to be alive. There were people inside that plane who had no chance of getting out." It took some 125 firemen more than two hours to extinguish the blaze using thousands of gallons of water and foam. The runway at Manchester airport, 185 miles northwest of London, was covered in white foam after the blaze. A team from the London-based Accident Investigation Board rushed to the northern city to inves tigate the cause of the disaster. One aviation expert speculated the fire could have been triggered by a bird being sucked into the engines. The- plane was full of fuel for the four-hour flight to Corfu. Two firemen helping with the evacuation from the plane were in jured when a second explosion flew them through the roof of the gutted plane, airport officials said. Witness Barry Atkinson, who was sitting in the airport restaurant when the incident occurred, said the jet instantly became a "big ball of fire." "It just went up," he said. * A maintenance hangar at the air port was set up as a temporary morgue, a health authority spokes woman said. The charred bodies were carried out covered in green tarpaulins. The fire marked the fourth major aircraft disaster this summer -- three of which involved a Boeing- manufactured jet. On June 23, an Air India Boeing 747 plunged into the AUantic Ocean off Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard. On Aug. 12, a Japan Air Lines jumbo jet crashed into a mountainside in western Japan, killing 520. In Dallas, a Delta Air lines Lockheed 1011 crashed on Aug. 3, killing 133. The Boeing 737 is one of the world's most popular planes with more than 900 operated worldwide. Boeing 737 has history of safety ByTimrflnD United Press International SEATTLE -- The Boeing Co., maker of the 737 jetliner that crashed in England, said Thursday that the type of twinjet had one of the industry's top safety records. The jets, introduced bv Boeing in 1968 to replace older propeller planes on short and medium distance routes, have carried about 1.3 billion passengers, said John Wheeler, a Boeing spokesman. "It is one of the safest airplanes in the industry ... " he said. "It may be the safest, it's difficult to say. The record changes every time there's a takeoff." Wheeler said there have been 21 accidents involving the 737 since 1968, "some of which have had fatalities. I'm not aware of any other incidents like this one." - Wheeler said the company would not comment on the possible cause of the accident in Manchester, England, until it received more information about the fire aboard the charter British Alrtours Flight KT 328. The plane was loaded with passengers bound for a holiday in the Greek islands. The jet was a 737-200, the company's first updated version of the plane. The ill-fated aircraft was delivered in April 1961 to British Airways, which operates British Alrtours as its charter arm. "Obviously we are dismayed that there has been a fatal accident," Wheeler said. "This is the first fatality on a British registered 737." Wheeler said he could not state "firmly" if the company would send a team of experts to investigate the Manchester disaster, "but I'm sure that will be the case. The British would request an investigative team sent by the manufacturer." There are 1,110 original or updated versions of the 737s currenUy in service, Wheeler said. He said the plane is flown by more airlines -- 123 separate companies -- than any other airplane in the world. The plane will accommodate different seating configurations and carries an average of 125 passengers, excluding crew. The newest model, the 737-300, is a more powerful and fuel efficient version of the plane with a longer fuselage and advanced engine technology, Wheeler said. Boeing investigators are already involved in examining the cause of a 747 jumbo jet that crashed Aug. 12 on a mountainside in Japan, killing 520 people. f & 7ft *7*4*4mi44fo*4, Inc.
