Pag# 4 McHENRY PLMNDEALER StttonA Tu--day, August 27, 19R5 Community * Now is the time to renovate lawns By Bruce Spangenberg For various reasons, lawn quality may become so poor that renova tion is needed. Lawn renovation re fers to any work to improve an unhealthy lawn, usually involving reseeding or over-seeding to some extent. Now through early Septem ber is the ideal time for renovating lawns in McHenry County. An important first step in reno vating lawns is trying to determine the cause of the poor growth and correcting this before trying to re- seed a new lawn. Start by looking at the soil. Poor drainage and compac tion are two common soil problems leadffig to poor turf growth. Adding l*ganic matter, such as compost, "peat or rotted manure, will help loosen heavy soils and improve drainage. Trying to grow the wrong species of grass for the site can also lead to poor turf. In full sun areas, plant a blend of several cultivars of Ken tucky bluegrass for the best results. Kentucky bluegrass mixed with red (or fine) fescue is the best choice for areas receiving both sun and shade, while red fescue is the best The (EXTENSION) People for areas primarily in the shade. Tall fescue may be used in various problem areas, such as slopes, rough areas or high traffic areas, either in full sun or partial shade. Excessive thatch is another for lawn renovation. Various types of power equipment will physically tear up thatch, but it will more than likely return unless steps are taken to correct the cause of the build-up. Frequent ca&ses of thatch problems in our area include compacted soil, poorly drained soil and sod placed over heavy clay soil. Core cultiva tion, or aeration, is a great way to solve the problem of thatch and help it to decompose. Equipment may be rented or professionals hired to aer ate lawns. When renovating a lawn, it is im portant to adequately prepare the soil before reseeding. Kill any exist ing weeds using glyphosate (Round up, Kleenup). Till the soil to a depth of at least six inches, adding organ ic matter at the same time. Then rake the area to the desired slope, adding a small amount of starter fertilizer, such as 5-10-10. I Once the seedbed is prepared, arefully seed the area, using a quality seed. Follow recommended seeding rates, which are one to two pounds per 1,000 sq. feet for Ken tucky bluegrass-red fescue. After seeding, water the area thoroughly. Applying a weed-free straw mulch helps keep the seedbed moist and protects the seedlings until they are well established. Gradually re move the straw mulch as the lawn begins to grow Mow the new lawn when it is about 1.5 times the de sired height of cut. Fast foods can be nutritious There are more than 140,000 fast food restaurants across the nation, accounting for at least 38 percent of }he total restaurant industry's jnarket. j In light of recent focus on nutri tion, consumers may be wondering how fast food eating and proper nutrition pratices can be coordinat ed. It is possible if high caloric loods with little nutritional value lire avoided, says a spokesman from the Illinois State Council on Nutrition. Community Calendar The more negative aspects of fast food consumption are that many meal combinations lack variety and are low in calcium, vitamin A, fola- cin, vitamin B6 and magnesium. They often are high in salt, calories and fat content. The best way to handle the good nutrition-fast food dilemma is to first consider how often such estab lishments are frequented. Restau rant goers should visit different places to ensure variety in diet. Places with salad bars and soups offer the best chances for nutrition. One method is to refer to the basic four food groups guide. It includes dairy products, breads, protein foods, and fruits and vegetables. Consumers should consider their menu for the rest of the day and eat accordingly. Also, if a fast food meal includes excess calories then less food should be eaten the rest of the day • as long as proper nutrition have been followed. Other sound nutrition ideas in clude shoosing milk or a milk shake rather than soda, ordering cheese on sandwiches and requesting extra lettuce and tomato. If it is impossi ble to eat properly at the fast food outlet, supplemental foods should be brought from home, such as carrot sticks, apples or oranges. Healthful meal decisions can be made while eating at fast food chains as long as consumers follow the guidelines, according to the spokesman.
