After the satellite was launched, commander Joe Engle aimed a tele vision camera at Hurricane Elena in the Gulf of Mexico where a hurri cane warning has in effect from Louisiana to Florida. "You can see it looks like several circulatory patterns that are not quite organized into one yet," Engle said before the storm was upgraded to hurricane status. "If they ever decide to join up it ought to be a good one. That's a pretty good sized storm." Elena was threatening the east ern guif coast but if it should make landfall farther west and endanger Houston, flight director Jay Greene said NASA could move shuttle con trol to a backup center at Green- belt, Md. ' The 7 Vton Syncom 4 military communications satellite sailed out of Discovery's payload bay at 5:49 a.m., spinning serenely away on its side like a giant drum-shaped Frisbee. "And Syncom's away, Houston," astronaut James "Ox" van Hoften said. "You get to wrestle with one just like that in a couple of days," re plied astronaut David Leestma in mission control. "That's what I'm looking at," said van Hoften, who will have to manually grab the lifeless $85 mil lion Syncom 3 satellite Saturday so he and fellow spacewalker William Fisher can attempt repairs. Engle, co-pilot Richard Covey, John Lounge, vajn Hoften and Fish er then began chasing Syncom 3 in ernest. The target was about 3,600 miles ahead of Discovery when its sister satellite was launched Thursday. Syncom 3 has been marooned in a useless orbit since launch from a t i m e r t h a t c o n t r o l s c r i t i c a l functions. The control circuits of the new Syncom were redesigned following the April failure of its predecessor to ensure ground controllers would be able to fire the spacecraft's rock et motor even if its timer failed. But t h e n e w s a t e l l i t e w o r k e d a s advertised. Fisher and van Hoften plan to walk in space Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, to install electronic gear to bypass Syncom 3's control mechanism so ground crews can operate the spacecraft. "There's every possibility you'll be able to shorten (the.repair jod) up some, although we're planning f o r t h e p o s s i b i l i t y o f t w o (spacewalks)," Robert,Springer in mission control told the crew. If the repair works, ground con trollers will fire up the satellite's ICBM-type rocket motor in October, after its frozen rocket fuel has thawed out, to send the craft to its operational altitude 22,300 miles above the equator. NASA was paid about $35 million to ferry the new Syncom into orbit along with two other communica tions satellites launched Tuesday after blastoff.
