Marshall > United Press International A studio apartment presents two major living problems -- lack of storage space and that closed-in feeling. The remedy lies in use of furnishings that are multipurpose, scaled down and simple and soft colors that expand a room. You also must realize your limita tions. You have only so much space to work with in your one room and you can't* have everything, interior designers say. The first thing to do in furnishing a studio apartment is to decide how it is you want to live, says Ellen Frankel, home furnishings editor of McCall's magazine. Do you like contemporary styling or the country look? Do you want to eat in your kitchen, in a separate dining area or sitting on the sofa at a cocktail table? How do you want to sleep? On a bed that doubles as a sofa or a sofa thattfoubles as a bed? "It's very important that you be happy and comfortable because there's no place you can go," Fran kel says. This is more than just a room; it's your entire home. In shopping for furniture, multi purpose is the name of the game. "You have to make every inch work," says designer Dick Butler, co-owner of The House Store,'a fur nishings "supermarket" in Chicago. The sofa bed is an obvious choice here. Butler also recommends low chests that double as end tables or cocktail tables and dining chairs that are suitable as desk or living room chairs. Partner Ron Barnum found an adjustable height cocktail table that serves two functions by raising to dining level. ' Choosing movable items -- tables and chairs on casters -- allow you to rearrange the furniture when guests come over. If your apartment has high ceil ings, consider building a loft bed, advises Margot Gunther, an inde pendent designer based in New York City. Put a sofa or bookcases under the bed. Another great space saver is the storage wall. "Its popularity comes from people who are in confined spaces who have to use the air rights of their room," Butler says. You can find wall unitsyftiat include not only shelves, down beds and ers advise. The increase was the strongest since the 5.2 percent jump in March and lifted the annual rate of resales to 3.11 million, after seasonal adjustment. The National Association of Real tors expects 1985 to end up as the best year for existing home sales since 1979. Sales were helped by a slight de cline in mortgage rates. Despite the overall improvement Western states reported their sec ond consecutive monthly decline, a 9.3 percent drop. Sales of existing houses went up 0.7 percent in June and were un changed in May. Sales of new houses in July will be reported by the Census Bureau Thursday. REALTY WORLD - ' x-.V'X;*:; t (H .................... • . V. V. And don't forget tlRTstorage opportunities un der your bed. Scale is another important consid eration when you want a room to look larger. You may love that huge wing chair 6r Chippendale break- front, but wait to buy it until you are in a larger apartment. Color offers what possibly is your greatest latitude as a do-it-yourself designer. For the price of a can of paint, you can turn a room into a home, providing your landlord al lows it. A general rule here is that pale colors will make the room look larg er, so pastels always are safe. A low contrast between the color of the furniture and that of the walls also will expand a room, designers say, so select light-toned furnishings if possible. Frankel strongly advises that you choose the wall colors that make you feel good. Rose tones are calm ing. Blues may remind you of the sea or sky. If you must have some pattern to the walls, and you don't want to shell out for wallpaper, Frankel suggests using wallpaper borders. Another idea is to paint three walls in one shade and the fourth in a complementary color. "It breaks up the boxlness of the space," Gun ther says. You'll want something simple at your windows, designers agree. "No ruffled curtains or heavy drapes or elaborate treatments," Butler says, "You want to keep the interest in the room not at the window." Mini- blinds are a designer favorite. Matchstick or rice paper blinds or window shades work, too, and cost less. These blinds also work well as room dividers suspended from the ceiling when there's no door be tween your kitchen and main room. If you're on a budget -- and you likely are since you're living in a studio apartment -- don't overlook the mass merchandisers in shop ping for furniture. The chain stores sometimes have well-designed fur niture at attactive prices^1 rankel says. Yard sales antirfemnapt shops for fabrics are another option. But don't buy something just be- .. cause it's cheap. If you don't like it, you're stuck with having to look at it all the time. "If you could possibly splurge on one piece that you love," Frankel advises, "it will make you feel good every time you go by it."
