"This is also an educational program to help cancer patients and their fam ily members understand the disease and how it affects their lives. Per sons taking part also learn ways to cope with cancer." An oncologist (physician special izing in the study of cancer) dis cusses physical changes that may occur as a result of the disease and the treatment. The individual's re sponsibility in his own care with special attention on nutrition is pre sented during a discussion by a di etitian on the hospital staff. A physician therapist discusses what a person can do for better physical fitness within limitations imposed by the presence of cancer. A mental health technician con ducts two of the weekly sessions, Mrs. Stanley said. "Strengthening communications among family and friends" is the fifth weekly session's topic. The following week "learning to like yourself, especially when you don't feel well or don't think you look good" becomes the theme of the discussion. Phyllis Koltz, R.N. helps conduct the weekly sessions. She said people such as ministers, social service specialists, and home nursing agen cy representatives also participate in the eight-week course. "In addition, when we learn the participants in the class of 12, we often bring in a specialist to provide more specific answers," she ob served. "At our last 'I Can Cope' class we had three lung cancer pa tients and as a result brought in a speaker able to focus on their concerns."
