Freund said he would estimate that sales have gone up at least 50 percent since the new GMAC rate was started. He pointed out that the low rate is especially beneficial for the buyer that intends to keep a car for a long time. The reason for that is that if the buyer keeps the car for five years or so, the trade-in difference won't be that different between a 1965 car and a 1986 model car. That way the buyer doesn't lose a lot buying a car so late in the model year. Jim Danca of Danca Oldsmobile in Crystal Lake said the GMAC rate only applies to three models he sells. He added that they really don't even have inventories of those three models in stock. "Business is good but I think it would have beegjgopd anyways," Danca explained. According to Keith Kmieciak, sales manager for Spring Hill Ford in Dundee, Ford offers a rebate as an option like Chrysler, but he feels the lower financing is a better deal. "You save much more with the lower rate in interest than with the rebate," he explained. Kmieciak said Ford began offering the special rate in order to keep in competition with GM. He added'that the results have been fabulous for his dealership. Whether to buy a 1985 now or wait for the new 1966 model cars is not an easy decision. One thing that is clear is that interest rates are lower now then they have been in a long while and they more than likely won't be go that low on the 1986s for some time, if ever.
