6 McHENRV PLAINDEALER Section A Friday, August 30,19B5 World South African police kill 3 rioters Daylong racial violence results in 16 deaths, 114 arrests By David CoweU United Press International CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Po lice battled rioters outside Cape Town Thursday, killing three men and raising the toll in the bloodiest 24 hours of racial violence in more than five months to 16 killed, dozens wounded and at least 114 arrested Violence also spread to Cape Town's mixed-race suburb of Mitch ells Plain as students threw rocks and gasoline bombs at police. Authorities then sealed off the area, a so-called model township built on remote sand dunes outside the city, with armored cars and roadblocks and declared it a riot area. Police spokesman Lt. Attie Loubscher said police shot three men Thursday in the township of Guguletu as violence, triggered by a planned march to African national ist leader Nelson Mandela's prison, continued there for a second day. He said at least 114 people have been arrested in related violence. State television reported a 3-year- old child burned to death in a fire- boming in Guguletu Wednesday and said scores of people injured in Thursday's clashes were ferried to a clinic in the Crossroads squatter camp for treatment. Earlier, police said they shot and killed eight men 4n Guguletu Wednesday and found a ninth man killed by bullets that did not come from a police weapon. Doctors at a private clinic in Cape Town's Crossroads shantytown said another man died there of police gunshot wounds and they treated at least 50 wounded. Hie report has not been confirmed by police. Police said a man of mixed race was shot and killed in Paarl, about 30 miles from Cape Town, when rioters stoned delivery vehicles. Two people died overnight when po lice clashed with rioters in Kwa- T h e m a a n d S o w e t o , n e a r Johannesburg. Police said they arrested 96 peo ple in Cape Town Wednesday and early Thursday, 10 more in Sebo- keng, south of Johannesburg, and five in the Pretoria township of Mamelodi. The violence in Cape Town was the worst in a single 24-hour period since March 21, when police shot and killed 20 blacks in a crowd heading for a funeral in the Uiten- hage township of Langa. At least 665 people have died in a y e a r - l o n g n a t i o n w i d e b l a c k uprising. The worst previous rebellion be gan in June 1976 and continued for 11 months. Close to 600 people died then as the violence spread from Johannesburg to Cape Town and other centers. The Cape Town violence began as police clamped down on the "col- wed" township of Athlone, along side Guguletu, blocking plans for an outlawed march to Pollsmoor Pris on, where Mandela is in his 22nd year of a life sentence for treason and sabotage. The police used whips and batons ed blacks from leaving Guguletu to join the planned march. The protest could not be mounted as police used rubber bullets, whips and teargas to break up gatherings and attempts to stage marches. A number of clergymen, academ ics and students were arrested. Law,and Order Minister Louis le Grange announced Wednesday that police were holding clergyman Al lan Boesak, the march organizer, incommunicado and he would not be allowed to see his lawyers or his family.
