NORTHWEST HERALD Section A Saturday, August 31. 1985 Page 13 Sports Cubs succumb to dose of fine Wine By Kent McDill UPI sports writer CHICAGO (UPI) - The Atlanta Braves raised their record to 5-0 under new manager Bobby Wine Friday with an 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Terry Harper and Bob Horner each managed to knock balls out of Wrigley Field despite a 12-mph wind blowing in, and Atlanta rookie pitcher Joe Johnson kept the Cubs in the park while giving up 11 hits in a complete-game performance. "The wind helped us a little bit today," said Wine, who replaced Eddie Haas as manager Monday. "I told him (Johnson) if they get the ball in the high wind it's going to blow it back. I'm sure that's not exactly what he wanted to do (give up 11 hits) but he did his job when he had to." The two swings by Chicago that would have gone out on another day were by Ryne Sandberg in the fifth and Jody Davis in the ninth. Sand- berg's ended up as a run-scoring double that pulled Chicago to within two runs" at 3-1. Harper hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Horner had a solo homer in the sixth.
