V,y Central Australia, particularly the town of Alice Springs, is the prime viewing site. "Alice," in the dead heart of the . Great Outback, has been listed by the U.S.-based Sky and Telescope magazine as having the highest clear sky index of any location in either the Northern or Southern hemispheres. Thousands of professional and amateur astronomers from all over the world are expected to come to Alice Springs and other parts of Australia for the two weeks Halley's Comet will be visible. One of the spots favored by Japa nese stargazers is Bathurst, 93 ntfles west of Sydney, where visi- jtfs can be taken quicklf into the -CtQrkness of the bush lor viewing • tfider skies free of concentrated $ity light. v -Another group of amateur Japa- astronomers plans to set up a , ~-.jp near Coonabarabran, New C»5gl>th Wales, hiring telescopes from Australian National University servatory at nearby Siding igs about 185 miles northwest dney. ^ {alley's comet rotates around the Solar system on a 76-year cycle and last passed by Earth in 1910. For the first time, technology will allow a detailed study of the comet by instrument-studded satellites, in cluding two Soviet spacecraft and probes built by Japan. In July, the 10-nation European Space Agency launched a space craft called Giotto from Kourou, French Guiana. Giottt) is equipped with data col lecting instruments and cameras and will fly into the comet's tail to make a detailed study. Astronomers will receive photo* graphic signals from the probe on the giant radio telescope at the Commonwealth Scientific and In dustrial Research Organisation as tronomy observatory at Parkes, 155 miles northwest of Sydney. The spacecraft, built by British Aerospace, is named after the Ital ian painter Giotto di Bondone, who is thought to have used Halley's comet as his model for the painting "Star of Bethlehem," completed in 1303. The Australian Overseas Tele communications Commissions te- Western Australia will be the prime command station for Giotto's mission. Although Alice Springs will at tract large numbers of astrono mers, they will be mostly amateur enthusiasts. The professional watch on Halley's Comet in Australia will be done by the multi-telescope Sid ing Springs Observatory. Dr. John Dawes, manager of the observatoj^r-said one telescope al- ready-totfs the comet in sight and has taken some photographs, al though of fairly poor definition. Dawes said the comet will make two passes by Earth, in November this year and March 1986. It will be seen best from Australia on the lat ter pass and will last through the end of April. He said good sightings could be lemetry station at Canarvon in made with ordinary binoculars. MEMBER A.S.C. A.S.E.
