The two teams were scheduled to begin the best-of-three champion ship series Tuesday night at the VFW. If necessary, game three will be played Thursday night at 7 p.m. Decker Construction rolled to the finals by whipping Raymond's Bowl- Huff's Decorating in two straight, 6- 4, and 6-5, last Tuesday. By Herald sports staff HARVARD -- Richmond-Burton's volleyball team struggled Tuesday against Harvard in both team's Big Eight Conference opener, but when you're as talented as R-B, even when you don't play well, you're still pretty darned good. The Rockets soared past Harvard 15-9,16-14, coming back from a 14-10 deficit in game two. , , "I thought Harvard would be tough," R-B coacb Jan Welch said. "I was looking forward to a close game, but not that close. But we needed it." Welch said Paula Weber starred for her team defensively. A "She did a great job in the back- court. She made a save in the second gafhe, on game point for them. She saved a ball that was a foot off the --, __--.--, floor," said Welch. After Weber regained the Rockets' .serve with a dink for a sideout, Michelle Kildahl served the R-B to 13-14, the 13th on an ace. Kelly Math ews got R-B the ball back, and Kris Fredericksen served the final three points of the match, with Jean Skier- "manski ripping a spiking ace for the win, a play that was "beautiful," according to Welch. "We had some mental mistakes, some long serves, an illegal rota tion. I don't know what our minds were doing," Welch said of her Rockets, now 2-0 on the season. "But we're coming around. I'm glad we don't have to play Huntley for a couple weeks yet." R-B will try to keep its unbeated string alive when it hosts Genoa- Kingston Thursday night. McHENRY -- If there was a bet ter way to get things started, John Sytsma sure didn't know of it. The McHenry High School soccer coach was a happy guy Tuesday, and rightfully so. For when people look back in the record books years from now, they'll find that McHenry High School won its first-ever soccer game, 4-3, on Tuesday, Sept. 3,1985, at West Campus, over Antioch. Ivan Cvitkovic may not have had a mission, but he sure played as if he wanted to make^ Sytsma and his teammates happy.'The junior cen ter-forward scored all four McHenry goals, two in each half, to lead the Wactjprs to victory. /they 9ught Ivan would get a cou- / nett, a / ootti pie. He actually should have made a couple others," said Sytsma. "He had some great passes to some of our younger kids, too, butHhey were just tired and missed the net. But I'm real pleased with the way things went." Junior goalkeeper Matt Roy stead ied after a jittery first half, which ^ ended with the game tied at 2-2. After the halftime break, Roy came out more aggressive, holding the Se- quoits scoreless in the second half until a meaningless goal with 30 seconds to play. Sytsma credited (no kidding) Cvit kovic as the offensive player of the game for his brilliant goal-scoring,, and senior Ron Murray as the War riors' defensive standout. "Ron didn't start, he came late in the first quarter, and played some very, very aggressive soccer," said Sytsma. "The kids call him 'Rambo' because he hustles so much and works hard. Besides Ivan, he's the fastest on our team. "Our whole defense played real good, though," Sytsma said. "Trent Castle, Scott Smith, Steve Peter, all did a good job. Jerry Ben- and Murray. They were great getting the ball to Matt so he could clear it out. They all did a great job. Our center midfielder, Mark McClaughry, had a great workout, and our freshmen wings, Greg Grant and Perry Marke were super in their first varsity game." Sytsma was able, to do a lot of things in his first game, including playing all 21 of his white-and-or- ange-clad players. "Antioch's goalie made some nice saves on Ivan," Sytsma said, "and a couple on McClaughry. I moved Jeff Sorensoit to wing, and he did a nice job of feeding Ivan the ball in the second half. Trent Castle had a nice assist to Ivan on the second goal. "Ivan has a lot of speed, and he's very good with the ball," Sytsma "Matt was just exceptional in the second half," complimented Sytsma. "He had two goals float over his head in the first half. It was windy, and the ball got up in the wind and he couldn't do anything about it. But in me second half, he Sytsma's Warriors will try to im prove on their 1-0 season and career record when they Wednesday. "I can't ask for anymore. Start a program, win the first gam really ... great," Sytsma said. "Some of the kids, are ready. Antioch did a lot tackles, which we try to discourage. That's the only bad thing, we've got some bumps and bruises." explained. "In soccer, you want to get the ball to your center forward, and our offense is designed to do that with Ivan. He had a lot of nice one-on-one moves." The only bad thing amidst a lot a whole lot -- of good ones. I
