A surge in the price of General Foods stock helped the Dow Jones industrial average close with a gain Of 3.58 to 1,339.27. Analysts said that without the more than 7-point jump in the price of General Foods stock, the Dow would have closed 3 points lower than Friday's finish. Broadef indexes rose modestly. The New York Stock Exchange in dex added 0.07 to 109.12. Standard & Poor's 500-stock index edged up 0.01 to 188.25. The price of an average share added two cents. Advancing issues outpaced de clines 765-728 among the 2,009 issues traded. Big Board volume decreased to 89,850,000 shares from 95,040,000 Friday. Composite volume of NYSE-listed issues on all U.S. exchanges and over the counter totaled 109,687,990 shares compared with 116,488,150 traded Friday. The market opened lower on prof it-taking after Friday's rally, ana lysts said. When selling dried up, skeptical investors became more in terested and the market moved into plus territory in early afternoon trading. Blue chips and technology issues led the way. Analysts said "reasonably good" news on the economy encouraged buying. The market's rally Friday was spurred by an unexpectedly sharp 0.3 percentage point decline in August joblessness. The high ground was quickly lost, however, as declines overtook ad vancing issues in afternoon trading and the market turned mixed. In <the last minutes of the session, advances beat out losers. The Dow industrial average still was ahead and the market closed up. Charles Jensen o| MKI Securities said the move belonged to the blue chip issues. "The broad market lagged," he said. "For a healthy move up, we have to see a spreading out of buying interest into the sec ondary issues." Ban on gold coins opens ideas WASHINGTON -- President Reagan's move Monday toward banning imports of South Africa's gold krugerrand is likely to spur congressional approval for minting U.S. gold coins.
