Swtlon C Friday, September 13,1905 Wheels Mini van puts Chrysler in black By J« A Zverlna are air conditioning UPI Auto Writer ($791), three-speed automatic ($472) and power driver's seat ($235). Besides generous head and legroom, a host of thoughtful con veniences are found throughout the minivan. Since early 1984, Chrysler literally had the rapidly growing minivan market all to itself, except for a cou ple of offerings by Volkswagen and Toyota. But neither came close in terms of Plymouth Voyager -- which together have so far racked up sales of about a quarter million for the 1965 model year alone. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor have now entered this lucra tive market with the Chevrolet Astro and Aerostar, respectively. They are both rear- wheel-drive and more van-like, compared to Chrysler's front drive setup. Chrysler's minivan has remained essential ly unchanged since its introduction, and will have only minor trim and option revisions for 1966. Its extended hood- line houses all drive- train components, giv ing it an aerodynamic appearance while offer ing front occupants am ide leg room. Only some minor grille trim differenti ates the Caravan from the Voyager. Both may be ordered in the L trim or more luxurious LE trim. v The Voyager LE test ed is base priced at $10,105, but options swelled the sticker to $14,552, including a $450 destination charge. An option package discounted to $628 in cludes an interior light group, gauge instru mentation, intermittent wipers, cruise control and an overhead con sole, among others. An other package, at $988, has the larger 2.6-liter engine, tinted side glass, remote rear win dow controls, seven-\ be a nuisance, passenger seating and a f "The sliding side door 20 gallon fuel tank. provides an ample en- Other major extras tryway with a single Financing lifts sales of Ford Ford Motor Company reported that financial incentives available on nearly all of its 1985 car models and about half of its truck models helped its Chicago zone dealers increase new car sales In August by 26 percent, compared with the same month last year. Ford Division car sales rose by 55 per cent; and Lincoln-Mer cury dealers recorded a 33-percent increase in Lynx sales. Purchases of Escorts were up by 102 percent, while Thun- derbird sales rose by 65 percent. Under the financial program, buyers are of fered a variety of op tions: 7.7 percent fi nancing on a 48-month loan financed through Ford Motor Credit Co.; 8.3 percent financing on a 60-month loan; and a cash rebate on a car purchased for cash or when the customer gets his own financing. The rebate ranges from $400 on small cars such as Escort and Lynx, to $1,000 on the Merkur XR4Ti and Econoline Club Wagon. The program will run through Oct. 2. The one-piece rear lift- gate raises high out of the way for easy load ing and unloading. The Caravan-Voyager may be ordered with ei ther a 2.2-liter or a Mit- subishi-made 2.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The 2.6-liter in the test model, EPA rated at 18 city-21 mpg high way with the automatic, shows adequate high way power, but is slug gish on acceleration and noisy at speed. The hard, numb feel of the minivan's brakes is the major complaint voiced by owners and reviewers alike. Al though the minivan dis plays car-like balance and handling, its brakes give the impression that it may not stop in time. Underhood accessibil ity to owner-servicable components is excellent with the exception of the fan belts because of the transverse-mounted engine. x Fit and finish of the Caravan tested was first class, something that is rapidly becom ing expected as Chrys ler spends millions of dollars to improve qual ity levels. But the van tested had a non-working oil pressure gauge and was hard to shift from park into drive. ^Although the rear drive setup of the Chev rolet Astro and Ford Aerostar may serve the commercial market better, the Chrysler minivan still offers the potential carbuyer the best all around deal in passenger minivans, es pecially when the stan dard five-year-50,000 mile warranty is fig ured in. the console operate the rear quarter windows for added ventilation. The drivers' position is excellent and very car-like, as opposed to thejiigher, bus-like po sition of larger vans. The optional power seat or tilt steering wheel provide a suitable posi tion for almost any driver. The instrument panel has easy-to-read dial gauges, but the tilt wheel obstructs the top of the speedometer and gas gauge when in its lowest position. The fuse box is handily lo cated on the lower part of the dash. / The LE's full seating option provides room for six passengers plus the driver. The two rear seats may be removed or interchanged, but it takes a lot of muscle and more than one per son to remove them. The back seat moves forward about six inch es to increase rear package room, or may be folded down and used as a tabletop. Like the Astro, pas senger or cargo space in the minivan is in- craesed by mounting the spare tire under neath the vehicle, but changing a tire during inclement weather may Chrysler s Minivan is one big reason why the automaker minivan market all to itself except for a couole of is back in the black and doing better than ever.
